But then practically every label, every genre assigned is an absurd restriction with little meaning.. I was talking about that indie rock which, after being used for bands produced by independent labels from the 80s onward, has become a way to understand a certain type of making music..

One can discuss in strictly musical terms or in terms of "attitude," in my opinion... If we talk about attitude, the prototype (aside from obviously going back to the beginnings, the Velvet) for me are Sonic Youth. Then, if we talk about music, there are many who contributed differently... and I see the Pixies as both attitude and music, the most "important" (for what it might be worth to make such a statement...) because their style was unique: "I have immense talent and imagination but I don’t give a damn, I have fun, I experiment without being 'avant' or noise or any defined genre, and I merge the high and low of rock, the catchy chorus pop songs and, for instance, the multiple distortions..."

I think indie stands for "indiescutible"... or at least it's the most appropriate for the indie that I like.... :)
