Well, to say that Tortoise have never shone gives you a "catthatsuffs" kind of effect... whether we like it or not, they started an entire musical movement, along with Slint, you see. Mixing electronics with jazz and post-rock has always been their defining characteristic, traceable throughout their entire production, and this seems to me to be the easiest listening album they've ever made! Differences of opinion ;)
