But indeed hard rock, for me the issue is not "it's bare and makes me crap," it's more like "it's bare and doesn't communicate anything to me," it doesn't even remotely have the thrills of a "Pink Moon," which in terms of bare-bone simplicity is stripped down to the bone. I repeat, the album grabs me, but live it's just a fail.

I fully agree with what Bob says. The album is not bad at all, quite the opposite! But seeing it live felt like an evening among friends with a drunk person strumming the guitar in some way. Flat.

I went to see it twice, one time he bailed (pretty common for him, it seems) and the other just let me down completely. I'm okay with a sparse arrangement, but it should at least be interesting. Unfortunately, Canali doesn't add anything.
