A denunciatory film with yellow/police undertones that suit it well. It's less a film about war and more a film about values, particularly about being a father, as if Hank has failed to instill in his son all the ideals that allowed him to become someone. A well-shot and well-acted film. Dismissing it as mere rhetoric is a gross error that undermines all the work of emotions and thematic references that "In the Valley of Elah" conveys throughout its duration.
