I also think there's a slight drop in tone compared to "The great cold distance," but overall I still find this CD well done. The band has now shifted towards a mellifluous gothic style, and I think that over the years they'll either follow the path of Paradise Lost (meaning they'll return to hitting harder, more or less) or continue down this "soft" road. In my opinion, excellent tracks are Forsaker, The longest year, Idle blood, Inheritance, and Departer, while I'm less fond of Onward into battle and Nephilim. I reiterate, overall I consider it a great work.

I'm "revisiting" the discography of Katatonia and this, among the first four, is undoubtedly their worst. It's self-absorbed, trying to be haunting with those abrasive riffs, but it ends up being essentially boring and even lacking in ideas. Overall, it avoids mediocrity but "Discouraged Ones" is absolutely superior to it.
