Fifteen years have passed since that discussion; the colleague who emigrated from communist Romania is now 54 years old and finds himself unemployed because a long illness allowed the employer to legally dismiss him. When we meet, he always says to me, "what I can, not what I want. I thought capitalism was better than communist dictatorship, and instead..."
PS I haven't read the book and I will never read it. The horrors of communism were taught to me in middle school (1975); now, there are two options: either something was taught in school to those of my generation, or others, while the teachers were explaining, were very distracted.
