The turning point seemed to be dictated by chance... all their equipment was stolen (amplifiers, guitars, and so on... - not to mention Cale's departure... -), which resulted in them coming out with this much 'drier' album, less extreme and, therefore, appreciated by many critics who hadn't cared for them during the first two...; the most subtly morbid? I don't know, probably because when listening to this, many pay more attention to the words, given the 'soft' music...
