I completely agree with pier_paolo_farina. Great musician, mediocre composer (his solo career proves it).

In parentheses, some of the ideas and solutions developed a bit playfully here have later been revisited in the theater environment: if you pay attention, the rain of notes in the intro of Paradigm Shift is almost identical to that of "The Test That Stumped Them All," but the rest of the piece also shows similarities at more than one point: and this is just the most blatant example. So these projects can also be seen as kitchens for new ideas, which can be reintroduced, perhaps with some improvements, in other situations.

I don't know why, but Rudess's work doesn't intrigue me that much... I just don't feel like listening to it, yet he's a truly phenomenal keyboardist. Nice review.

And then there's personal taste to consider and curiosity: I, for example, generally prefer other musical genres and very different sounds (!!!), yet when I heard about this project, the musicians involved, and their intentions, I immediately rushed to buy the record, excited by the curiosity to hear the outcome. And I must say I was pleasantly surprised, even though the artistic and emotional value of the record, as you say, is limited.

In fact, it’s up to people to decide whether to buy it or not.

As ajejebrazorf keenly points out, this album is clearly a stylistic exercise, a playful experiment; it does not aim to be a prog album, and in fact, there is absolutely no prog in it. It's an album directed at enthusiasts, at those who want to see what can emerge from four musicians like these coming together in a studio for a week without the pressures of the record label or their official guise. Take it as it is (if you want to appreciate it). After all, just a quick listen to the tracks I pointed out in the previous comment should prove me right. I've never heard funk in the Theater.
