I almost forgot... Good review (there's that oversight on "The Day The Light Went Out" which comes from the ATTWT sessions and not from Abacab... but it can happen). - If you liked the live tracks from the "Duke" tour, I recommend downloading the excellent bootleg "Duke Sides Live" from which they were extracted!

This box set is pretty good... there are some truly interesting tracks that inexplicably get excluded from the official albums in favor, maybe, of more commercial pieces. For example, if "The Day The Light Went Out" had been included instead of that nonsense "Follow You, Follow Me," the whole "And Then There Were Three" would probably have benefited a lot! "It's Yourself" remains one of my favorite Genesis songs. Also quite interesting are the jazzy "Naminamu" and the pleasant "Submarine." Among the live tracks, my favorites are those from the '80 tour: especially "Ripples" and "Duke's Travel/Duke's End." It's a shame that some pointless tracks and mediocre remixes lower the overall quality of the 3 CDs.

Ah Pibroch... it's clear that I have a soft spot for the Mark 1, don't you think?!? :-)

I listened to it when it came out... honestly, I don't remember it well, but it didn't excite me that much. Anyway, I think that if I listened to it again, my comment would be like the three above!

A well-made review... too bad I don’t agree with a single word! - In my opinion, "Deep Purple" is a fantastic album in every way. It's rich and varied: "Chasing Shadows" with the overdubbed double drum line is decidedly unsettling, just like "Bird Has Flown." "Fault Line" gathers the seeds of "Tomorrow Never Knows" by the Beatles... resulting in a (short) gem. "April" paves the way for the subsequent "Concerto For Group And Orchestra," and it's one of the best ideas from the Purple (group + orchestra, just orchestra, a brilliant pop-rock styled coda). - Then... Evans the worst singer of DP??? Although he has a different style, he easily holds his own against Gillan and Coverdale. At most, the one really inferior is Turner. Your personal judgment as the worst album of the group seems absolutely excessive to me: let's set aside my opinion for a moment (perhaps also excessively positive)... but this "Deep Purple" is definitely superior to albums like "Who Do We Think We Are," "Come Taste The Band," and three quarters of the post-"Perfect Strangers" production. - I'll close here... let it be clear: my intention wasn’t to reprimand you (that would be absurd: everyone has their own idea, and it's right to respect it!)... I just wanted to present my diametrically opposed viewpoint. - Until next time!
