There’s no comparison, this is much better than the others. They’ve stopped being whiny and manage to evoke emotions... they are on the right track.

Alice has been a lyricist and composer, a musician, a sound engineer, and a producer. In Italy, the role of women in music was limited to being merely singers, with few exceptions, and most of the time they had to compromise with the music industry to produce commercial music. Alice made courageous choices, publishing works of classical and sacred music, and to do this she had to forgo many opportunities. In Europe in the early '80s, there wasn't a strong women's music movement. For example, Kate Bush's debut album, in my opinion, lacks the freshness and innovation of "Capo Nord," which I do like, but Alice's debut is so much more; it marks a significant break from the song structure, no longer talking about ladies, fairy tales, and the like. A confessional song emerges with acidic tones and strictly private visions of life, accompanied by bold musical inventions (when Emi listened to "Il vento caldo dell'estate," they said, "..but where's the chorus?".."..it will never be successful"). We need to break free from the narrow-minded view that everything foreign is superior because that isn't always true. For me, Alice is one of the greatest female artists of all time, and she is Italian...

The first two albums have been reissued in Japan on CD. I saw at the record fair in Genoa a whole series of German promos of Alice that were quite impressive... including perhaps one of her earliest tracks... the Italian version of the song from "Poseidon," I believe. Of the 33 RPM records, there was the German version of "Capo Nord" with "Per Elisa" as the B-side (the Italian version doesn’t have it, it ends with "Guerriglia Urbana"). And then there’s "Azimut" with all the dates of the European tour listed with a sticker on the cover, the German version of "Alice" titled "Per Elisa" with a different cover. And then "Falsi Allarmi" with "I Treni Di Tozeur" added at the end... published this way only in the Netherlands and this duet with Battiato never released on 33 RPM in the rest of Europe. Plus, a brand new German copy of "Mezzogiorno Sulle Alpi" still in its cellophane. On the train back from Genoa, there were two German guys... seeing my copy of "Elisir," I heard them discussing Alice.

There isn't much to say, it's just history. I found it on vinyl, German edition for 10 euros. Some copies go for 60... maybe because mine has a whole handwritten letter in German on the inner sleeve, which lowers the price. Just for the record... the first LP "La mia poca grande età" from '75 is priced at 200 euros... Thanks for the comments.

For me, this is a very brave album, a fundamental step for Paul. The critics slammed it without even listening to it, just like with RAM; to them, Paul had broken the perfect toy of the Beatles, while praising the mediocre production of Lennon, the poor victim of McCartney.

Do you know what? She hopes to publish "Art et decoration" in my opinion, and such a big name for an independent label would be hard to sustain. Damn, in this country they sign anyone and everyone (Giorgia, Elisa..) and Alice is free. Back in concert in Pinerolo on September 5th, if I'm not mistaken. She herself said that fans need to start believing that a new album won’t be made.... going back to knock on EMI’s door would feel like a defeat for her. Battiato could even lend her a hand..

I've recently asked about when Alice's new work will be out. There’s a possibility that Alice may not record anymore; there are no updates, and that's truly sad. She doesn't have a record label, and the majors... well...

Battiato has a tiny little page, while Alice has her entire discography analyzed in a detailed and precise manner with significant historical references.
