The Flaming Lips At War With The Mystics

Kosmo, the songs you heard on the radio should be "Mr. Ambulance Driver" and "The W.A.N.D." If you find those two (especially the first one) quite good, then I think you'll enjoy the album (in my opinion, they're definitely not the best, but tastes vary).
Josi, thanks for the trust, but this makes me feel too responsible... I confirm that, in my view, it's better than Yoshimi (even though Yoshimi contains extraordinary songs like "All we have is now"). I repeat that some parts are truly evocative, while others give you that crazy and sad happiness (or happy sadness) that only some of their old tracks could do (for example, I mention "Moth in the Incubator" from Transmission, in my opinion).

I wrote the review while listening to the CD with headphones on. Since then, I have listened to it a few more times, and I would like to highlight what I believe, after more attentive listens, are the strengths and weaknesses.
Strengths: 1) The album is, in my opinion, very emotionally engaging. Definitely more emotionally engaging and less cold than Yoshimi (thanks also to some extremely evocative and intimate inserts never encountered in their previous albums). 2) They have retrieved the dadaist rhythms of the early period (see "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song" versus "Turn It On"), albeit reinterpreted in a more technological way, which is a good thing. 3) The tracks have more progressive (which I consider a plus) and more original structures than Yoshimi. Particularly noticeable in "It Overtakes Me/The Stars Are So Big, I Am So Small… Do I Stand a Chance?"
Weaknesses: 1) The overly simple (disco style) and almost irritating refrain of "The Sound of Failure/It's Dark… Is It Always This Dark??" 2) "Mr. Ambulance Driver"
Conclusion: I don't know if it's the best album by the FL, but if Yoshimi was a 5, even though it also has some tracks that are too pop and irritating (including the much-lauded "Do You Realize"), this one is also in the same league.

I want to leave a pointless comment for once that isn’t about music. Wow, how cute it is!

Great review with those comments, on the art accessible to everyone who isn't in a hurry, which I totally endorse. I confirm, De-Baser is an oasis of people who aren't ashamed to think and reflect even when starting from topics that some might consider trivial, like music (not for me).

Anthon, I haven't read the review, but I have the impression that if I could understand certain terms and technical definitions (e.g., misolidia scale), I would be able to appreciate it. Could you attach, in the form of a comment, a dictionary?? Thank you very much. P.S. The comment is serious; this is a great work of art and as such requires a "mathematical" review of this kind, very different from mine, which is so abstract, sentimental, and impressionistic.

Dear Stefano, is it really necessary to start a review by OFFENSIVELY and BANALLY insulting someone? Was there really no other way to say that there’s little peace in this matter? Think about it, people, think about it. We are all responsible if then while walking down the street someone spits in your face just because you annoy them a little.
PS Just to be clear, I’m not too fond of Lecciso either.

Let’s not exaggerate, some things written by Faletti are truly beautiful: the music and (sometimes especially) the lyrics (by Faletti). Just look at Lamento di un Pupazzo di Neve, for example. Maybe it’s because they’re all members of the Golden Dawn for those so Yeatsian lyrics!!!

Guys, if you like Hawley and especially Coles Corner, give Scott Walker a listen (if you don’t know him). In particular, Scott 3.

A truly free and democratic site must publish everything (or almost everything), unfortunately. At this point, let's say it's normal that in De-baser "they've landed" (sic) even these reviews...
