John Zorn Filmworks XIX - The Rain Horse
Voto:
Goodness, Erik Friedlander and Greg Cohen, 2/3 of Masada String Trio, promise a lot. Just to repeat myself, what I don't find essential is the Moonchild trilogy, which seems negligible compared to other Zorn works and that seems to have very little (thankfully ;) ) to do with this latest endeavor.

Of course the Stones are better than the Beatles, by a mile!

Great review. I don't know the album, but Bolan is a great artist. I only have Electric Warrior and The Slider; I need to delve deeper.

Basically the "prequel" to Masada. The exploration of Jewish roots in Zorn's music started here. Honestly, it's not among my favorites; Never Again has a bit of the same effect as Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music. Nevertheless, it's one of the key albums in Zorn's musical evolution.
John Zorn FilmWorks X: In The Mirror Of Maya Deren

John Zorn is definitely among my favorite musicians. Now, saying he is the greatest composer ever in the 20th century might be a bit much, and besides, it wouldn’t be in Zorn's spirit. Zorn’s music has its roots in citation. Without Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, Husker Du, Charlie Parker, Edgar Varese, Harry Partch, bossa nova, grindcore, etc., it probably wouldn't even exist. Let's say Zorn is a sort of Borges of music, drawing from an enormous library of Babel and creating new things by contaminating different genres. Zorn’s poetics is about mixing all the things he likes and doesn’t want to lose, blending them together coherently. It’s practically a kind of cosmic blob composing through citation. The album you’re proposing is indeed among Zorn's best soundtracks; congratulations on the choice.
Marc Ribot Asmodeus: Book Of Angels Volume 7

Masada in hard rock version with traces of John McLaughlin. Not bad, but I almost expected better from Ribot.

You've intrigued me quite a bit. And given Caetano Veloso's comment, I think I can trust it blindly.

this is what I miss, like almost everything from his production in the "contemporary classical" category. at a glance it seems a bit challenging, but sooner or later I want to listen to it. For example, Cartoon S&M at the beginning is tough but ultimately rewarding.

Thank you all for the comments, and especially @pamparius for the tips. @purpulan: Regarding Pabst, he's only relevant for the cover, which is taken from his film "Pandora's box." But are you stepping out of "les enfants du limon" or what?
