I heard them live a couple of weeks ago in Pisa, and I almost lost my hearing. There is indeed an attempt to create different and original music, and I appreciate that, but in the end, I was quite disappointed. De gustibus. The comparison with Zorn and Patton doesn’t really hold up in my opinion; they have a much more punk approach. There’s very little jazz, but a lot of hardcore. The rating is for the concert I attended, of course; maybe I was just unlucky and caught the wrong night.

Good review of an album I'm not familiar with. In reality, I believe Zorn hasn't released anything for Ipecac; he already has his own independent label, Tzadik, with quite an immense catalog (if anything, it's Patton who has released a few CDs on Tzadik).

Hi Hal, I actually missed that. However, I see that Feldman and Friedlander are also guests, and that sounds like a guarantee (if you haven't already, I recommend looking up the "masada string trio" on YouTube, there are 3 or 4 fantastic live videos!).

I listened to "I See a Darkness" and in the end it didn't seem like such a big deal to me; it felt pretty flat overall. What really escapes me is the comparison with Nick Drake that I've heard somewhere. I dunno.
