: ) Colaiuta is really a beast! : D I mean, he's someone who has such coordination that he can play different rhythms simultaneously with both arms. No, I think he beats everyone. Otherwise, someone who truly makes the drums "speak" is Max Roach.. that's going into Jazz, indeed..

x superintruder: Am I trying too hard to be cool?? Of course! The point is, you see, that the drummers I mentioned don't really stray much from Portnoy.. you think he plays with a monstrous style, but in the end, we're still talking about rock drumming: the way he holds the sticks is the same, the way he plays the snare with a Rim Shot is the same, same use of dynamics, same school: it's not like just going faster and throwing in some beats with a double pedal creates some kind of new style. To find a DRUMMING style that is REALLY different from all those I've mentioned (including Portnoy), you have to go into Jazz – now that’s a whole different story.
P.S. Chad Smith is ABSOLUTELY not a funky drummer; he is a rock drummer through and through, with a style that's much more "white" than "black" if you know what I mean. He just played in a band that blended the two styles, so of course, he acted accordingly.

x anonymous: it’s you, poor thing, who still doesn’t understand a damn thing.. what would you have supposed, pray tell, that my post about Dream Theater is driven solely by "antipathy" and not by musical considerations? there’s obviously not a single line that suggests that.. the problem with you DT lovers is that as soon as your idols are touched, you go to pieces, you become sick, literally, pure paranoiacs.. I know this well, having endured months of delirious posts in the review I wrote about this album (and how much fun I had, oh, how much fun I had!), unfortunately, there’s little to be done: musically, they are zeroes for me, no prior antipathy, rather a posteriori.. I could obviously cite a thousand reasons, but if you don’t mind, it’s a bit of a struggle for me, so if you’d like, go read my review of this mess along with the related comments.. Ciaaaoo

x anonymous: for your information, since I play the drums, I might know a drummer or two.. no copy-paste, I'm sorry.. ; ) there’s a rather off-key note in your comment; you say, referring to me and ..Caz.. your exact words: "oh yes, we instead are cool, we listen to Quinzy's Time, I savage destiny in black, Curiosity panther killbilly avant-garde stuff, stuff that we only hear because we are enlightened minds...we're so cool, we're so connoisseurs, for us Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are just kids' stuff"; now the problem is: I literally don’t know a single one of the first bands you mentioned, and above all: what the hell do Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin have to do with this? who mentioned them, apart from you in your unfortunate comment? We’re talking about Dream Theater here, do you get that? Stuff that not even someone with average intelligence would dream of comparing to sacred monsters like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.. would you have the courage to do it? You’re out of your mind, totally.. you have to have an extraordinary arrogance (as is typical of many Dream Theater fans, if we really want to play the labeling game) to even come close to comparing Dream Theater and Pink Floyd like you practically did.. I feel sorry for you if you can’t understand that this isn’t snobbery, but good taste, which is a bit different.. But don’t worry, maybe one day you’ll manage to understand it ; )

P.S. Portnoy great drummer? Poor guy, it’s clear he’s someone who has really worked hard, sweating on the drums ten hours a day... too bad it’s just as obvious that when it comes to taste and intelligence, he’s quite lacking... I’ve never heard a more tedious drummer, and it’s surprising that much less technical people than him can be ENORMOUSLY more expressive with so little, as previously mentioned: take Jack Irons, Brendan Canty, Jimmy Chamberlin, Chad Smith, Dave Abruzzese, Matt Cameron, Dale Crover, Vinnie Paul, not to mention "monsters" who are far more monstrous than him like Tim Alexander, Brain Mantia, and the same Vinnie Colaiuta, who of course totally outshine him...
