Talking Heads Remain In Light

Dear Blackdog: 1) I never denied that this is an evolution of previous themes; however, I said that this is pretentious and I add that it is essentially self-referential, whereas "77" was a record much more endowed with meaning. Certainly, they seem bourgeois to me, terribly bourgeois. Since their intuitions, unlike those of Patti Smith or Suicide, are completely meta-musical; they do not express a feeling, they express a pure aesthetic experiment. Consequently, they seem to me like intellectuals very aware of their own status. In other words, they are bourgeois. 2) Let's not say bullshit, please :-D I never said that Suicide are "cheerful" and "carefree" (where did you pull those ugly terms out from??) I said they are much more spontaneous, and I add visceral, and I add not little bourgeois art school students (like the Feelies, by the way, who at least had the courage to really infuse their neuroses into their music), in other words, overall much, much more expressive in the literal sense of the term. 3) The idea that this had more impact than Lindsay seems like complete nonsense to me: perhaps it had more impact on commercial rock or the charts, but I would have serious doubts about the underground... From this perspective, the Ramones kick the ass of the Talking Heads, and they certainly weren't less revolutionary in their intuition, simply more direct and above all much, much more plundered.

not to say, but to claim that Kansas are "one of the best rock bands in the '70s music scene across the ocean" means not knowing the '70s across the ocean.. not to say, but let's save ourselves from these overly lavish definitions..

Yes, it's true, you’re right.. 77 comes before Devo. But not before Marquee Moon, Suicide.. albums that, in my opinion, are less intellectual and more full of substance.. anyway, 77 remains the best of Talking Heads.. this is starting to get TOO intellectual.. they should have overthought things less, in my opinion ;-D

always great dear Sfascia.. however, de-urlatorie proposals of this kind don't really interest me much at the moment, even though I am confident in the quality of a proposal made by her (sif)fatta

There are many things that are seminal, and the Talking Heads are much less so than others. Before them, there were Devo, for example. And with them, there are Television, Suicide, Arto Lindsay, and Feelies, for instance. Let's say more precisely that the Talking Heads are the most famous :-D

I agree with Blackdog: indeed for me the true and significant New Wave (despite my nickname ;-) is that of New York; it is they who are bourgeois, not the New York new wave. To respond to pretazzo, there’s punk and funk and disco, and there’s punk and funk and disco... the Gang of Four and Blondie are both quite nice.

I disagree: for me, there are enormously more ideas here... it’s just that there are too many to be contained and well expressed in a homogeneous form... Pornography is granite-like and repetitive (Short term effect and Strange day share almost the exact same form)... in my opinion, they are two records at odds with each other... I still understand your point of view.
