Great album, although it has been somewhat over-mythologized. Some guitar solos like the one in "paranoid android" are terribly dated and cheesy, certain atmospheres are a bit too ethereal (that is, boring). Surely "Amnesiac" is their masterpiece.

I agree with Alex that Adam doesn’t do anything extraordinary on this album, but he reached his peak on Aenima, guitar-wise to the point of madness: even on Lateralus it was the rhythm section leading the way... however, with every listen it grows, Tool are like a drug. And you look for faults because they are the best.

alex77, give it a few more listens... at first, it didn’t do much for me either, but now I’m starting to appreciate its nuances.

The review of Lateralus by those clowns at Pitchfork Media shows what level that site is on. They give extremely high ratings to people like Daft Punk and Belle and Sebastian, and then trash Tool: it's madness. Aenima was an absolute masterpiece, and Lateralus just as much. I'm listening to 10000 Days quite a bit; I think it might be slightly inferior to its predecessors, but Tool remains the best guitar band in the world, no doubt about it. Perhaps the surprise effect is a bit diminished: their complex arrangements, the drive of Carey and Chancellor (undoubtedly the best rhythm section in the world), Jones' hard rock arabesques, and Maynard's shamanic chants don't amaze like they used to. However, in the moments when they let loose, as in "Vicarious" or "The Pot," they still do wonders.
Rating 4 stars, 4 and a half, but only in relation to the previous ones: in the current landscape, "10000 Days" shines bright.

"A truly unique band that carries on the legacy of the best Velvet Underground, especially in the last one with Layla." It was already absurd to hear the Velvet compared to the Strokes, now even to Oasis...
