Blur The Great Escape

"Jarvis Cocker and Damon Albarn, who know more about cultural and musical heritage than all the Seattle bands put together, were presenting 'Top Of The Pops' to show that you can have talent and still be cool. This is a lesson from which I personally learned a lot." In fact, it shows in the nonsense you write as a reviewer that you've learned the lesson very well. But please go back to listening to Duran Duran and Ash.

"Britpop was the last major movement to give voice to bands coming from the indie circuits." The fact that they came from an independent circuit doesn’t mean their music was necessarily decent. They made crap music; the early singles of Blur weren’t bad, but then they completely messed it up with songs like "Girls and Boys" and other nonsense. Comparing the indie scenes in the UK to those in the USA (Sub Pop, Dischord, etc.) is qualitatively absurd, like comparing Ortega to Maradona. The same Blur would start to pull a few rabbits out of the hat when Coxon began to mimic Pavement and Sebadoh on their 1997 album.

Francis, I’m quoting a line from Jarvis Cocker - whom you hold in high regard - about Blur. "Blur are not artists and they express horrendous values." The lead singer of Black Grape, on the other hand, said, "Blur are middle class people playing for middle class people. Period." So those who criticized Blur didn't necessarily do so out of prejudice, as you can see. Specifically, I don’t find that their "life trilogy" theatrics present the social depth that you attribute to them. I find it a languid basking in their myths, especially musical ones, and in this sense, I find them unbearable.

you talk so badly about Scaruffi, but you're the first to make USA vs UK comparisons in this review, typically Scaruffian contrasts.......

The early Depeche Mode were pitiful, but still better than Duran. But certainly albums like Music for the Masses or Violator were something the Durans could only dream of...

I know the duran very well, songs like "the chauffeur," "rio," "hungry like the wolf," and I really can't stand them. Any song written by Martin Gore puts those by duran to shame. You have a very peculiar, disgustingly Anglocentric view and you insist on making sweeping judgments. You are nauseating.

ahah Francis, you haven't scored a single goal, you're just a conceited loser. There's not a single hole in your arguments that has hit the mark, and indeed you've taken heaps of shit on this site. Think about reviewing Robbie Williams, Duran Duran, and Blue; that's your genre.

what a drag these reviews are... what's the point of tearing down Spain? When will there be a stoning of Mino Reitano?

Great review: the album is just as described, interesting even though the decline had already begun and J was diluting the white noise of the beginnings with melodies that were now catchy, now innocuous. It remains an undisputed cornerstone of the grunge era.
