I've been wanting to listen to something by Mr. Varese for a while, and I thank Copernicus for having written something about him... It's true that Zappa was crazy about him, and that anecdote is amusing where, as a young man, he went to a record store with just enough money to buy a certain record; but then, seeing "Ionisation" by Varese, he decided to take that one because the cover featuring "the mad scientist face of a guy with salt-and-pepper hair" was irresistible. Zappa said to himself, "finally, a mad scientist has made a record!"...

I believe that The Mars Volta are a great thing for today’s music because they are among the few who create music with imagination and a bit of experimentation, and this is the only "fuel" to avoid ending up in the huge pit of bland music that’s circulating today (I’m not just talking about commercial pop, but also about the wave of that kind of new WAVE or whatever the hell it is that amazed me with Franz Ferdinand or Interpol, but which has now become a fried and refried mishmash—see Kaiser crap).......I don’t know the album in question, but even if The Mars Volta are sometimes a bit verbose or unoriginal, and it’s true, let's still give them some credit, if nothing else in terms of their approach to music.

however, they have churned out eighty trash hits: all this commercial music today stems from that specific context, where the only thing that mattered was selling, and where skilled marketing experts (not musicians), in a frenzy of hyper-capitalism, fashion, and consumerism, thought of everything (that's when music began its downward spiral: the only original thing was Madonna's t-shirt with the phrase "italians do it better".... that was her personal market research.........

but Fred is right too: we should stop condemning the eighties from every angle because a lot of good stuff came out of that decade: Minutemen, Cure, Husker Du, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Gun Club, David Sylvian, Talking Heads, Tuxedomoon, Donald Fagen, Bauhaus, Chrome, Nick Cave, Cocteau Twins, CCCP, Jarre, Foetus, Peter Gabriel, Guns'N'Roses, Talk Talk (the later ones), Tom Waits, Dream Syndicate, Dead Kennedys, Springsteen, Butthole Surfers, MADONNA.......and many others. The same goes for the nineties.

for FRED: if I review a record and talk about music, unless I'm reviewing instrumental albums, I definitely talk about lyrics... here in particular it's mostly about the lyrics, because when it comes to music... well... anyway, let me describe Madonna's music: the album opens with a nice pop tune (material girl - make sure to check out the amazing lyrics, I'm telling you), which perhaps remains one of the best pop songs of all time and leaves Steely Dan and their ilk in the dust; noteworthy is the great musical transition from the bridge to the chorus, featuring excellent use of vocals and the computerized backing (I'd say it gives a nod to Zappa)......... then the other tracks are all poppy, identical, and pointless... make sure to translate the lyrics of the title track, that's a bit the essence of Ciccone's thought...... all in all, kudos to Madonna and to those who wrote the album...... 1 STAR

It seems that most people enjoyed the New Year's firecracker... in a review, one can do whatever they want, but probably for another album, I wouldn't have made it so "free": let's face it, there are probably few people on Debaser (I suppose) who go to read a review on Madonna to actually get information about the album. They go there to mess with her a bit and with those who speak well of it... but tastes will always vary... and then it's not an entirely free review; I delved into the theme that led to the creation of this great "concept album."
