You're dead wrong: heavy metal is a genre that combines hard rock with the speed of punk. Even if Harris claims to hate punk, it was actually Iron Maiden that fused these two genres, just listen to their early albums (the number is more mature). With Use Your Illusion I and II, they became as commercial as possible; what can you do, even Iron Maiden has turned into a shadow of their former selves and now they play Top of the Pops. At that time, metal was just taking its first steps; there were still new paths, new sounds, and new genres to discover. The Guns, with Appetite, were one of the first heavy metal bands in history. One last thing: you mentioned punk and glam rock. Metal actually derives from these genres: it's the combination of punk's speed and hard rock's aggression.
