Never liked them, I'm re-listening to the album. I don't like it. I don't like them. I don't warm up to them. The songs are too linear for my background (Residents, Negativland, Can, Faust). They're untalented, Steve Albini hated them with a passion, saying they were simply a bunch of fake intellectual clowns. I quote Albini.

Notes are notes, and they communicate something to us. Imagine, this morning I listened to The Dark Side Of The Moon again, and it seemed to me to be a really well-crafted album. I'm not saying it's a masterpiece, but the line is thin. Still, it's a great album. Why argue? Long live music :)!

It's not Goat - Liar or Head, but the album is even more varied than its predecessors. De-cano, but have you ever listened to the Lizard? To say they are a technical group with little originality is just a gratuitous insult. We're not talking about Dream Theater here. Have you ever seen David Yow live? Have you ever heard a hardcore band so violent yet simultaneously implosive, neurotic, psychologically unstable? For me, this Down is the album where Yow fades into the background to make way for a trio of incredibly inspired musicians. Ah, by the way, "Gesu Lucertola" isn't referring to Jesus, but to a type of Lizard that has the ability to walk on water; in slang, this lizard is called Jesus Lizard. If you want to write poor reviews like the one on Mercury Rev and give 1 or 2 to all the most genuine and valuable albums of the 80s and 90s rock scene: go ahead.
