The Shins Wincing The Night Away

For those two or three times I’ve heard it, it doesn’t seem like a step forward to me, but a step sideways. It shines a light on their less sunny side, if I may use the antithesis. I still need to digest it properly; for now, it feels like an excellent piece of pop craftsmanship, but with more head and less heart. And when you use your head too much, the result isn't always the best. Anyway, I promised myself to put it on CD; I’ve had it since mid-November and I’ve never managed to give it a serious listen.

Well, I can't put the Beatles and Love on the same level. I like both, but I love one band fundamentally for the album Forever Changes. The other one, whether they want to or not, even if they haven't made an album so perfect, has so many beautiful songs (well-rounded, lyrics, ideas, melody) that it would take 10 Arthur Lees to string together that many in a row. I only like "Yellow Submarine" from Revolver; the rest I find perfect. Sgt. Pepper has more lows, but also more highs. And if you think about it, Abbey Road is genius but monstrously uneven. Perhaps the White Album remains the most cohesive, but even there, I'm not entirely convinced.

the discussion has stalled folks, I want more nonsense, I see user savonarola diving into the nonsense gap, let's hope he raises the ignorance level of the latest comments, a bit too soft-hearted. And come on people, you've taken it too seriously. You can't comment on media constructs that are barely there like the aforementioned. it's a waste of time. Indifference is the best weapon.

Damn, I didn't know it was already online; I'll download it. I bought the other one when no one had ever heard of them; I remember that the artwork caught my attention and it was a time when I was feeling depressed, so I was doing some compulsive music shopping. But I never managed to fall in love with it; rather, it was hit or miss for me. My girlfriend liked it a lot, so now it’s in her section of the CDs. I haven't listened to it in ages, though... for example, even if they don't really have much in common, I've become more attached to The Shins among the small bands that blew up. Do you distinguish your "personal" collections from those of your partners? I look at my girlfriend's records with a bit of disdain, even though we have very similar tastes.

I’ve had it on my hard drive for ages, but I've never been able to listen to it properly. I need to put it on CD soon, or just buy it. Anyway, that little bit I heard didn’t excite me, while from the very first arpeggio of Alone Again Or, I was hooked in ecstasy. I might be wrong, but Forever Changes has few rivals. As for the Beatles, well, what can I say, I like Revolver as a whole album; it’s true that the Beatles’ albums are more fragmented, while this one seems to have a more homogeneous atmosphere. I don’t always consider it a virtue, though.

They are not disappointing; they seem to have guts and, above all, the right connections, considering the appearances in the live shows you mention, which is unusual for a band on their first album. But at least they seem a bit more serious than the Hot Gossip, for example (when I saw them, I would have knocked them around). Anyway, there’s better stuff out there, like the Cuts, both old and new. But, to each their own. The problem is that these guys aren't that underground, in my humble opinion.

The only one I possess and know best, so I can't say whether it's better or worse than the others. I'm very fascinated by it; the saltarello drives me crazy.

the last one for now is nice but has nothing to do with the playfulness of this and that before. However, I make an appeal: SOMEONE PLEASE REWRITE MY REVIEW!! It definitely deserves more, it's one of the few albums from recent years that might last.

I really liked it, like really, can you believe I was just listening to "Island" by Current 93 with Hon? It stimulates the vibrant points of my being. Knowledge should be for everyone; unfortunately, it's often wielded by a few as a weapon to create hierarchies. Everyone falls into the mistake of defending their own knowledge to avoid massifying it, or rather, to maintain a position of cultural dominance over others. This happened and happens to me too (a bit less now, also because I've realized I don't know a damn thing). I also add that it's not possible to fall into totalizing relativism, because it would become essentialism or worse, absolutism. But I definitely don't take refuge in faith, not in any religious form. Well, I'll continue tomorrow.
