The movie is AMAZING for the entire first half (the references to psychoanalysis and the whole process of entering the Club are beautiful), then, from the beginning of the second half, the film completely FLATLINES into the usual American mush of effects, punches, action movie, and so on. I DON'T KNOW....what a shame!!

@bjorc: The comparison with GRINDERMAN, in my opinion—and I repeat—can stand for the reasons I've outlined. Beyond a thousand words (NEW WAVE is a journalistic term that means everything and nothing; in fact, what Patti was doing was a sort of stripped-down, punky rock'n'roll, but we’re still in the same ballpark). The technical explanations here are of limited value... if I have to explain what I mean by "a structure" or what is meant when I say "a flat arrangement," we’d be going on until the wee hours without getting anywhere (which, by the way, you are NOT AT ALL INCLINED to listen to me, right?). And frankly... the desire to do so “jumps on me”!

@Hal: on the "predictable" I agree (by the third line you can already tell I’m going to speak poorly of it) on the "a bit boring"... I don’t know! What do you want me to say... certain exercises of pretty, sweet, and precious writing by many neat and meticulous reviewers bore me just as much, also equally predictable. I DON’T KNOW... WHAT TO SAY. In France they would say: Vive le difference! in Greece: De Gustibus non disputandum! and in DebaserLand?... :-)

Sure, let me listen to Neil Y.'s Golden Times, and I'll leave these little things to you since you seem to be a die-hard fan!

I don't want to say bullshit, but "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover" came out AFTER this film...

For "similar" I explained what I meant... that is, they START from a series of common elements: the basic training, the genre played, the respective leaders (established rockstars who are now older), the fact that they are contemporary records, etc. but that the outcomes are, in my opinion, very different (in favor of the Grinderman). I thought I had been quite clear... who knows. Clearly, I have the rare gift of not making myself understood...

MuffinMan... it may be funny, but there is NO DVD version of this movie!!!! ABSURD, right?! :-)))

Exactly, ogre... it’s precisely these "anarchist bullshit"/"nonsense" that make me appreciate it :-))))

Alright, let's go in order: ARRANGEMENT OF THE F*** is when the verses and choruses lack character, sound too linear and predictable, and give off an impression of a song structure that feels "heard before" and devoid of peaks of originality. If you listen to the tracks one after the other, there is NO kind of research, no study on the solos, nor even a minimum of invention; even the individual instruments sound indistinguishable from one track to another. Everything relies exclusively on the voice and charisma of Patti Smith, who, in my opinion, isn't delivering her best (I'm not saying in ANGER but in conviction!!). I mentioned Grinderman NOT BY CHANCE because they have quite a few things in common with Patti: A) they make similar rock'n'roll B) they are both giants in the history of Rock C) they have similar line-ups... however, the results are clearly different. (I wanted to remind you that I was a musician and even recorded a CD years ago... and I'll close the parentheses).
• In my movie reviews, I ONLY talk about films I have seen, and if I look things up online, I only gather technical or factual information (dates, pronunciation of names, or any facts I'm unaware of). • The phrases you quote (TOTAL ART) do not exist on any blog, and I don’t even know if the term actually exists, to be honest. • Regarding Lesto (with the style you don't like), there is only one review today, and this is it; for Stronko (more in line with your tastes), there are 2, and they are about films. • As for what to "expect" from a 40-year-old man, everyone is free to expect whatever they want... I expect to regress to a childlike state, can you believe that!

I didn't say "without emotions"... I said "without a linear and classic story to get passionate about"... 90% of movies start from the head to reach the heart, then there's a small portion of films that start from the eyes to reach the heart, which is a more complex and intricate journey that not everyone can understand and appreciate... this is one of those!
