Honestly, to really "understand" this album, I listened to it 10 times in 2 days, I read the lyrics, and in the end, I surrendered to the fact that they have insane potential. Exquisite technique, maybe they mix too many genres, you're right, but calling them "MTV metalcore" seems really unfair to me.

Great album, great band, for a genre that nowadays has some difficulties, as it isn't too trendy or overly polished by the media.
Excellent review, congratulations. I would have focused more on Abandon, the only true slow hit since Lies, which was 14 years ago.

In my opinion, you are focusing too much on certain "melodic" details that are indeed present, but not as heavily as you want to make believe.
What about creativity and technique? Do you want to compare Avenged to bands like Aiden?
It's not an emo album, it's not metalcore, it's a Hard&Heavy album, period.
Being young and not belonging to a specific metal genre is not a good excuse to trash excellent musicians. Moreover, some songs from sacred bands like Helloween have more melodic and commercial choruses than these, so let’s not start saying that something catchy isn’t metal or isn’t rock, please.

I listened to both of their albums, I find the songs well-crafted and extremely catchy, and above all, I was intrigued by the style, a crossroads of rock and alternative with a metal vein... I would love to savor some more technical components from this group, we'll see with the next album! Great review!

The absurd thing is that most of you haven't even given an objective judgment on the music... In my opinion, it's a winning album for the simple fact that it's sui-generis like few others, imaginative, well-played, and without exaggerations in a death/power/black style.
The only thing is, it lacks a touch of the edge that accompanied them up to City of Evil, but they certainly know how to play, and they know how to be original without overdoing it, which is rare these days.

Unholy Confessions and Chapter Four will stay in my memory forever; 2 simply magnificent songs. The rest of the album is also great, truly a remarkable piece of work.

Great review for a great album.
I would have spent a few more words on Ties That Bind, a standalone track, magnificent, hard-hitting, and well-crafted, like Metalingus from the previous album...
Like the reviewer, I don't care much for the "commercial tracks," if we want to call them that, namely Rise Today and Break Me Down... Ultimately, some songs are really beautiful, they have charisma (Ties That Bind, Come to Life, Coming Home, Blackbird, Before Tomorrow Comes, Watch Over You, and One by One) while the remaining ones say very little.

It takes a lot of effort to insult one of the most serious and poetic reviewers on DeBaser; but perhaps the meaning of his tropes and figures is too elevated for Mr. Trickykid.
Stroeblpeter, keep it up with the reviews, write great!

Listen to this album over and over again, because while it’s not technical or difficult to play, it’s made up of stunning songs that are well above average.
They really know how to write songs, and they do it well.
Meanwhile, their second album, Blackbird, will be released on September 10th.
