Country music makes me feel sick, so I can't fully appreciate this album. However, the hits "Shiny Happy People" and "Losing My Religion" are two rays of sunshine in the pitch-black darkness of the charts of that time.

The evocative "Sweet Love For Planet Earth" remains the highlight of the album, but the rest is quite good as well. One of those records (and it's not the only one, as it’s in good company) that blends genres that until recently would have seemed irreconcilable (psychedelia, new wave, ambient, prog, techno, industrial, shoegaze, and whatever else you can think of).

You might feel named, but Scotland at the time was full of talented (and unfortunate) groups, I think of Associates and Josef K.

I remember that in the 90s MTV aired some videos from this band on the show "Chill Out." Really special.

I must have listened to them a century ago. The genre wasn’t to my taste, but still, they were good, especially the singer.

So far I've stopped at the acclaimed "Each One Teach One," but I don't rule out picking them up again, perhaps starting from this. Great review.

I found almost all the singles from the first album pleasant and nice, while the first single taken from this one was rather dull. Good review but sorry people if I break in again... "to propose a sound that is entirely Western" but where is Brazil? And then, de gustibus, but "4 beautiful girls"??? Okay "4" but "BEAUTIFUL"??!!?!?

"I give the album a 4 because it’s a compilation, and in my opinion, you need to have all the JD’s albums." Voodoochild, this is not a "compilation"; this is an anthology box set that contains practically the entire discography of the JD. The only significant thing missing is the cover of "Sister Ray" by the VU. To gather everything in this box, you would need to buy at least 5 individual albums, so in the end, it’s almost more convenient to buy this one (if you can still find it). I paid €58 for it.

@people: it’s not just the synths that give you goosebumps to be honest, the mixing is that of any rock track (that is, guitars uber alles, no reverbs, nothing) and Curtis's way of singing is far from his style, it doesn’t even sound like him. The version of "Transmission" you're talking about, didn't they include it in H&S?

@supersoul: don't mention it, you did well to point out these Sleepers that might interest me. However, if you mention 1978, I must clarify that Curtis and his crew were already active, as well as the (for me) great A Certain Ratio. It's hard to determine if anyone borrowed/copycatted/imitated something from the others.
