Pearl Jam Riot Act

I don’t agree with many things in this review, but I’ve never considered myself an expert enough to engage in an in-depth discussion about ā€œthe highest grunge systems,ā€ so I'll avoid going into detail. I got interested in grunge (like many of my peers) just before everything started to ā€œsmell like the spirit of youthā€: yet I don’t think I ever truly understood what the common musical denominator was among such different bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and the like. Except, perhaps, for a widespread allergy to cashmere. Of the aforementioned bands, the only ones that have really survived themselves, I would say, are PJ: take away this and 1, maybe 2 albums, and you could talk about a nearly twenty-year discography that's more than decent. Not to mention that they still deliver quite a lot live. To consider them lacking in personality seems to me, honestly, a ā€œhistoricalā€ mistake. Not to mention that, probably, among the bands mentioned, they were the ones with the most familiarity with instruments and songwriting (but why did that cool guy from Abruzzo leave?! and where is he playing now?!) The album, in fact, is not that great, but some tracks (already mentioned) are good rock pieces. And often, that’s enough to scrape a passing grade.

Unfortunately, I only arrived at this genre when the Circus was leaving the city, but legends circulate on the internet about the relationships between the members of Kyuss that seem to come straight out of a Harmony novel: stuff about "electric shamans" deciding to dissolve the band just to preserve the pure and ancestral friendship that bound them, and so on and so forth... I don’t know why, but I've always found them rather perplexing...

@Battle: usually I don't like to get to know a band or an artist starting from a live album, but in this case everyone recommended it to me and this album is... they were right. I have rarely experienced such intensity and a performing "frenzy" in albums even of "harder" music. Stunning.

Here I am again. So, 5 for the album for life: beautiful, stunning, fantastic, grandiose, won-der-ful. Nod Scene is like watching a meteorite in reverse, with that "gaseous" trail ("...smoke!"), all the little noises Wynford makes with his voice are messy regardless, super rough sounds etc etc etc. 5, period, for life. The Kyuss of Sky Valley are still for me the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, but the first three of the Magnet are like Saint Ambrose and all the Saints. 5 to you, because, despite appearances, this was not a simple album to review and yet you are the Wizard, truly: with every one of your reviews, I cover my head with aged guano out of shame.

In my opinion, this is your masterpiece: STAY POWER, BUT STAY CANNOLO TOO!

I’ll give everything a 5 right away, then I’ll come back and explain why.

Among other things, they sing in Spanish (Argentinian version) and I really like the effect. In Ciudad de Braham, there’s a song whose chorus says: "Viene del desieeeertooo... Trae mucha arenaaaaaa." Just hearing "desierto" said that way makes me tan a little bit...

@Ole: the problem with Natas is that they create a very "spiritual" stoner sound: if you focus solely on the music, you end up diminishing the "emotional load" they manage to create. Toba Trance II, for example, sounds like the soundtrack of a western directed by Jodorowsky: you find stoner, Argentine tango, psychedelic hints, bongos, and tribal rhythms... there's a song, Humo De Marjuana, that alone is worth half the album: 15 minutes of really cool psycho-voodoo-tribal-ethno-stoner stuff! Or maybe I’m just overthinking things too much!:DDD!
