In my opinion, the superiority of Japanese cartoons lies in this: American cartoons (Flinstones, Bugs Bunny, etc., let's say Hanna & Barbera + Warner, just to be clear..) are largely based on the caricature-like characterization of their protagonists: Jerry's cunning, Tom's bad luck, Fred's roughness, Beep Beep's speed, etc. In practice, they could potentially last forever: their episodes are mostly the same as each other, they are "autonomous," they are interchangeable. Japanese cartoons, on the other hand, have an "epic" component completely absent in their star-spangled cousins: they are based on expansive storylines, where the viewer is called to follow the protagonist through multiple interconnected events. They are works destined to conclude only with the resolution of the stories they narrate. Think, for example, of Kenshiro, the so-called "shojo" mentioned on this page (Geaorgie, Candy Candy, etc.), but also of the grand epics of Macross and Conan the Boy of the Future. Miss an episode of the Flinstones? Who cares! The next one will be completely unrelated to the previous one and will practically be a photocopy of it (think of Beep Beep). Miss an episode of Lady Oscar?! You might feel a bit bad because you can’t know what happened. Of course, this is a general statement; there are exceptions (one for all, Lupin III). Bye bye.

@Poletti: I am from the party "Japanese cartoons beat Yankee cartoons 10-0," but I don’t want to spoil this memorable page with too serious discussions... let’s put aside our differences and enjoy the serenity that this page has given us!:DD!

To tell the truth, what you say is not entirely accurate. In one episode, the coyote manages to catch the ostrich (or whatever the hell that animal Beep Beep might be). At that point, though, he pulls out a sign that says: "okay, wise guys, you always wanted me to catch him... and now, what should I do?!?"

Orca zozza... I’m a space jerk: I must have missed the notification emails and didn’t stop by to thank you all... I hurry to apologize and thank everyone, from my revered teachers Psycho, Caz, and Fest (to whom I will never stop offering baskets of fresh fruit and sacrifices of Easter eggs for having shown me the light...), to "Il Capo" (so nice to see you around here so often!:D!), not to mention the overly generous Zaireeka (sending a special shout out, ;)), and of course the two DeRegine Trell&Kosmo and everyone else. In short: thank you so much, everyone! Personally, I still believe that the subsequent "Warriors..." is a good album, very close in sound to this "Hall etc": in my opinion, it’s worth giving it a listen! Cheers!

The Smurfs hold a record that is nothing to be envious of: it’s the cartoon with the most protagonists ever, and they are all equally unbearable. @recensore: please send them to bomb!!!

I told you, Candy Candy was never my cup of tea. I don't think I've seen all the episodes, but as far as I'm concerned, all the misfortunes that happened to her were fully deserved! Between the raccoon, the nuns, and the annoying kids from the pony school... the only character I liked was the free spirit, Terence, if I remember correctly: he seemed like a cool guy!

But trella-bella!! I have respect and devotion for the whole series of Lady Oscar!!! I swear it! But you'll agree that, towards the end, it becomes incredibly unlucky!! When André becomes blind just when he can suck Oscar like a lobster... it's truly a rare cruelty!

Damn, no... Candy Candy could never have made me stand up: forgive me Judge, but I find Candy Candy the least sexy female character in the entire history of cartoons. Even dressed as a nurse, she froze me! Rather Georgie, that filthy one with the incestuous relationship with her two adoptive brothers and even with the koala: she got me all worked up when I was a little kid. Not to mention the three sisters from Cat's Eyes...
