What A Funk?! What A Funk?! EP

I mean, funk has never driven me crazy, but the guys from the Untilted link must have a hard-on like Superman's armored car... I’m going right away to buy a giant poster of the singer in a tuxedo with a cigarette in hand.

Honestly, I still haven't figured out whether I like it or not. I should mention that I've never been a die-hard fan of Ciccio Braithwaite & Co., but this album struck me as a bit of a mess from the very first listen. There are a couple of tracks in their usual stretched-out post-rock style, somewhat easy-listening pieces to enjoy alone while sipping a Cynar, silently protesting against the wear and tear of modern life, and they’re fine (a bit self-referential and self-celebratory, but they work). There are distorted tracks that are square from start to finish. There are more electro-influenced pieces with vocoder. Etc, etc. There's the usual class, the usual elegance, but also a bit of craft: the melodies that really hit me/captivate me can be counted on one hand (some I found to be a bit bland), and the sounds... well, I honestly don't like them right now. To me, it seems like a rushed album, filled with everything. Maybe they want to evolve their sound a bit, I don't know. I can't wait for Azzo to tell me it's their best ever and that I should go back to listening to Cannibal Corpse... :)

I join the now-unanimous chorus of appreciation for Bale. In another review currently on the site, the issue of dubbing was discussed: I still get chills thinking about the atrocity that was done with Batman Begins. If it had been dubbed by Nino Frassica, it would have been less annoying. But this thing about losing and regaining weight... well! I don't know, it leaves me a bit perplexed... to be honest, it seems to me that he’s kind of cashing in on it now.

Well, it’s only natural, considering that for months you've been spending your nights (and those scraps of daylight when you're awake) on Facebook, scrolling through photos of debaserian women (and some highly selective debaserian men...) in swimsuits. In fact, I take this opportunity to make a call to all the debaserian women: unfriend panzerotto ciuffone! You’ll have your timeline cleared of all those indie-snob videos and your virtual virtue will be preserved!

In the meantime, I followed the advice of the national Odra and got myself a copy of The Savage Detectives from Sellerio. It's strange: I'm reading it slowly (I'm roughly two-thirds in), but little by little I've found myself completely immersed in it. In short: I'm really enjoying it a lot. The other day I was in a bookstore and discovered that Bolaño is now being published by Adelphi, and I'm a bit sorry because Sellerio had that breviary-like format from the village priest that I wasn't particularly fond of. I quickly grabbed Third Reich and can't wait to read it. A big thanks to this page that introduced me to such a writer. Take that!

There’s also an article by Baricco on the Carver - Gordon Lish story, originally published in Repubblica. Yes, I know, Baricco gets on everyone’s nerves, but I think this article, once cleansed of Baricco’s typical rambling, is interesting: OceanoMare _ Alessandro Baricco :: L'uomo che riscriveva Carver

To think about it, I’ve hardly ever read any women writers (as in female authors) or I don’t know a single one. I was forced under threat of eternal onanism (which means: if you don’t read this book, I feel like I’m going to have a headache for the next 15 years) to read a couple of books by Margaret Mazzantini (who I know is highly regarded in Italy), and - to be honest - they made me cringe a bit. For the rest, I guess I’m literary phallocentric. The only real exception, someone I really like is Agota Kristof (a Hungarian writer, living in Switzerland and writing in French...) whose *Trilogie de la ville de K* and Hier I enjoyed a lot. However, it should be noted that Kristof is a kind of demonic union between Franca Valeri and Carmelo Bene, so maybe that doesn’t count. And then that name... “Agota Kristof!” Wow...

The one I would have wanted by my side in my old age, who obviously has never cared a damn about me and is now happily married to the high school stud we both attended, has repeatedly recommended Alice Munro, a Canadian writer, dangerously resembling a mix between Rita Levi Montalcini and Sara Goldfarb, winner of just about every literary award ever given, past, present, and future, specializing in stories centered on female figures. To this day, my poor bleeding heart has prevented me from reading even a single page. But maybe IlFreddo might find it interesting... :)
