Mamoru Oshii Ghost In The Shell

About the comic issue: it seemed to me that your discourse is limited to Japanese stuff. If that’s the case... whatever! I’ve read (not many) manga during my teenage years and I think I had a blast with things like Alita, Bastard, Compiler, and quite a few others. Currently, the only stuff I can still read without feeling like a fat nerd who’s drowning in replays of Sailor Moon on Italia 2 are the works of Mitsuru Adachi, some anime like FLCL, Summer Wars, and those by the late Satoshi Kon (of whom I strongly recommend - if you haven’t seen it already - Millenium Actress), and very, very few others.

I read the comic back when it was first published (so - I’m afraid - nearly twenty years ago), and, it’s useless to hide it, apart from the numerous nude scenes, I didn’t understand a thing or something along those lines. Moreover, the same fate more or less befell my reading of Shirow's other works. Probably it’s me who is not compatible with the cyberpunk material. The anime, on the other hand, I remember appreciating a bit more: at the time of its release, I was quite impressed by the graphic quality and the direction. I also remember watching the sequel, which was perhaps inferior to the previous one, but still enjoyable...

Well, frankly, I couldn't find anything more outrageous than this:

This is a super disco track, with a monstrous slap bass line. Bettencourt here is really cool, and I’ve never understood how he manages to play what he plays with the guitar so low... By the way, about More Than Words: I’ve never understood how it can be so popular with girls. Just read the lyrics to realize that the whole song can be summed up as "If you really love me, give it to me. By the way, a blowjob will do too." I bet if I played it with a bald head and a little belly, everyone would call me a creep. Forget MTV...

I don't know the project and, above all, I'm not aware of its ambitions, but - frankly - I don't believe this record was made solely for commercial purposes. Nowadays, metal kids don't even buy the latest release from their favorite band, let alone a record just because it features the bassist from Mangiamorte... Besides, with a cover like that, if they manage to sell 10 copies, it would be a feat. A topless of Marisa Laurito would have been more appealing. eehhh... I see it's tough, dear! :) The initial project included 10 reviews and was supposed to conclude with Raging Steel by Deathrow (which is and remains one of my absolute favorite thrash albums). However, 1) in general, I'm as slow at reviewing as an old man trying to get laid; 2) over the last couple of years, work hasn't left me much time to write. I think that nowadays, for a review like that, I would need 3 weeks!; 3) in the meantime, some albums that were supposed to be part of the "opus plan" have already been reviewed (mostly excellently); 4) in general, I'm really too out of touch and far from this kind of sound now. I’ve almost always written about albums I knew by heart, that I just needed to listen to a couple more times before reviewing: but it's been way too long now, and my listening habits are so far removed from this genre that my judgment would be unreliable... What a shame!! :))
