Today is my birthday and I feel ancient. I'm so old (inside and out) that today I walked into a tobacco shop to buy a scratch card of the "Milionario." While I was scratching, I looked at myself in the mirror and my grandfather appeared, shaking his head at me...

True. Linkin Park wouldn't have become metal even if they had been sodomized by the T1000 from "Terminator 2 - Judgment Day."

Cigarettes aren't bought. They’re snagged from 16-year-old high school kids who listen to power.

Alas, I sold it after, at a concert, they tried to sell me a t-shirt without first tearing off both sleeves...

"New bands" Sepultura, Pantera, and Machine Head?!? But they've been around for over 20 years?!? SOAD, Korn, Slipknot, and Deftones have been around for about fifteen. The first three have an average of 2 good albums and are still living off their past or are on the brink of extinction (are Korn still around?). And Deftones are too far from metal to be thrown into the mix. And, for as much as I appreciate them, I don't think they sell out all their shows...

No way! For months now, I've been sitting in front of Pomeriggio 5 with D'Urso: "Everything sucks. But nice boobs..."

But in fact, I wasn't talking about the average metal scene. I was specifically referring to metal music in general and thrash in particular: in all of metal, there are no new leading bands, the "mass phenomena," the ones that fill stadiums. In pop, we have perhaps more ephemeral yet highly effective phenomena like Lady Gaga, who can afford world tours with almost every date sold out. Hard rock has over a decade more behind it than heavy metal and has already survived 2-3 generational shifts (Led Zeppelin - AC/DC - Nirvana). Thrash, on the other hand, (since we're talking about 4 thrash bands here) nearly faced extinction just 3-4 years after its birth, yet today, 20 years later, it remains a mass phenomenon thanks to those very bands that brought it to life. I don't know if it's pathetic or exhilarating... :D
