The crappiest job I ever had was cleaning the column ashtrays at Milan Malpensa Airport. I was working for a cooperative that had won who knows what contract: every day we had to show up in the departure lounge and find out what we’d be doing for the day. One day they took me and two other assholes and put us along the corridors with tiny scrapers to chip away at the filth accumulated from years of messy travelers. People laughed in our faces; there were those who enjoyed using the ashtrays we had just finished cleaning, then came to tell us we had to start over. I could smell the stale tobacco even in my ass, my fingers were covered in cuts... On the third day, at one point, I felt like crying.

In the splatter genre, the one I've enjoyed the most lately has definitely been "Hobo with a Shotgun": shamelessly '80s, with at least 3-4 truly successful splatter scenes and a wicked irony that I hadn't seen since the days of Splatters (which is indeed referenced heavily). By the way, the lead is Rutger Hauer, who probably hasn't made a film since Blind Fury. If we're talking about real horror instead, for me the best is still the first Nightmare...

I watched Piranha 3D! The reasons for watching it were essentially twofold: the first is that it’s directed by Alexander Aja, who a few years back directed that sick little gem High Tension (to be honest, he hasn’t really hit the mark since then, but I always give him a chance). The second is that it stars Kelly Brook, a girl with whom I had a brief fling a couple of summers ago: unfortunately, the spark didn’t ignite, but I still enjoy chatting with her when it happens. Anyway: as a film, it’s deliberately silly enough that I didn’t totally dislike it: technically, he’s really good, always throwing in nice references, plus here he included a lot of hot girls and raunchy stuff, a bit of gratuitous splatter, and some corny jokes… In short: nothing exceptional, if Aja had any chance of establishing himself as a great director, it seems he threw it away for good, but I believe he aimed to make a goofy film (also because I don’t think a movie about killer piranhas can have any grand authorial aspirations) and he succeeded.

I watched the trailer and, unfortunately, I found out that I can't watch this movie. I can't stand fractures. They make me nauseous. Just the 2 seconds of footage of the guy falling on his feet bothered me. I've had 127 Hours on my mind for months, but I still haven't had the courage to watch it...

As luck would have it, I was also a lathe operator. Of course, we're talking about CNC lathes or machining centers. I did it for all the summers during high school and for the first two years of university (then I changed jobs: back in the day, there was still the work booklet, if you want I can scan it and send you a copy). You, on the other hand, probably worked (if you even did, from the way you talk I think the hardest job you've ever had was removing hangnails...) just that month of July that year to finance your vacation with your asshole friends on some Greek island, convinced that you were doing some kind of alternative thing. "I’m Geenoo, 20 years ago I worked for 15 days in a workshop... it was terrible!!! Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and it feels like I can still smell that horrible greasy water!! If I were Stephen King, I would write a super scary book about it!!" Geenoo, spare me! :D

Indeed, nes is right... Cathedral and My Dying Bride are just the grandchildren of doom. And Manilla Road and Cirith Ungol (although the latter were definitely very doomy) are usually considered more like the godfathers of epic metal. The roots of doom (excluding Sabbath) I believe can be found mainly in the Saint Vitus-Pentagram duo and in some bands of the NWOBHM like Witchfinder General. The same Candlemass released Epicus Sticazzicus Salamadonnibus only in '86. Vitus, in the same year, were already on their third album...

From the Diary of the Geenoo High School: "Dear Diary, today I broke my back for 10 hours behind the milling machine. Fortunately, I had with me the 64th chapter of The Dark Tower, and time flew by in an instant. You know, dear diary, when I read Stephen, I soar with my imagination and it feels like I’ve already passed the public competition for the substitute usher archivist at the Court of Santa Maria Capua Vetere..."

It's not a matter of topic. It's you who is worthy of mockery regardless.
