Actually, the King Crimson of the nineties made a lot of attempts with the double drummer setup; in fact, they were really two trios (drums - bass - guitar) playing simultaneously. The album, I think it's called Thrack, or something like that, and Fripp stated that he got the idea for the double drummer from hearing the sound of the engines of two cars in traffic.
