Dear Alia, it seems heretical to me to think that this tsunami of mostly "useless" music shouldn't, in the ears of a discerning listener— as is right for a listener of Prince (or someone in the good soul of Zappa, we should be around those parts...)— be a bit of a penance. For heaven's sake, I listen to it too, and Prince is always good... but one should never "settle" for a genius. Otherwise, we risk questioning whether he is a genius at all. Cover: of course, it’s nothing personal (I play and sing, as you know, in a tribute to the Boss, just for fun; in my life, I’m a lawyer... nothing artistic, just rock 'n roll), but, for example, is Joe Cocker's career (all covers) to be thrown away? And here it’s the high-ups who have an interest (not just in music) in keeping the people ignorant, caught up in a subculture that identifies exclusively with entertainment.
