the Death Bowl was the best, with the chasm parallel to the impact point :P

It's a bit like shooting fish in a barrel; in the end, everyone knows exactly what to expect... the audience demands a body count of 13, a few nude scenes, a bit of brutality, and Nispel adheres to industry standards. In offering the eleventh film of an entirely similar series, he resorts to the almost/remake approach (a wise choice). It makes no sense to rant against a popcorn movie that fulfills its contract; if, in your youth, you watched all the films in the saga (a "nutritional" saga, as Cunningham says, precisely because the first film paid his household bills), you won't pay much attention to the flaws in this film, which shine almost brightly compared to the darkness of past productions.

I stopped at the second one on PSX, which was quite fun back then... but the review really doesn't cut it, I mean, it's a poor summary of what I can find anywhere on the internet or in any mediocre magazine. And since the game is trash, you give it a passing grade?

Dear dictionary, I completely agree, the 5 should be reserved for true masterpieces and milestones. The game in question wavers between a 3 and a 4 depending on the nostalgic effect; it's understandable that someone who played it in '89 would give it a 5, but objectively it's not a milestone. Just like many other games reviewed here, but one can just point that out in the comments. The review is full of clichés that I thought were extinct, as well as being unnecessarily vulgar. Well...

I've only seen episodes in a random order, unlike Ranma which I've watched/read in full... it seems that you can watch everything on YouTube in HD too.

RPG this? Maybe an action game... what happens when you take the name of a legendary PC saga (that one is RPG) and throw it to the console audience. A tragedy for those who know the originals, a nice action game with role-playing elements for the uninitiated. More seriously, on consoles, there are those from the Japanese school, and that’s what you’ll have to stick to; you will never reach the depth of games like the first Baldur's Gate with a controller in hand.

Ok, I’ve thoroughly tested both versions with good results… In short: Darkplaces is a total conversion of the engine, allowing for a very high degree of customization of filters and special effects (mipmap, hdr & bloom, etc.), the lighting effects and shadow management are by far the best available for Quake, it is definitely stable, and the high-resolution textures are exactly the same as those of the original game. The engine is flexible and scalable, but not excessively optimized; noticeable drops in frame rate can be seen even on quite powerful machines today. Tenebrae, on the other hand, is a mod, so the engine doesn’t change but is enriched with new filtering/transparency capabilities, smoke effects, etc., as well as new lighting effects. The mod also stands out for its unique textures on practically everything—weapons, monsters, and surfaces—so much so that some of these surfaces can hold their own against those in many modern shooters. Aesthetically appealing, when set to maximum, the game is definitely more optimized than Darkplaces, but the fact that it hasn’t been updated since 2004 is evident: stability is the price to pay on certain machines, and if you are part of this group, expect some crashes without reason or warning. In conclusion, I would say that Tenebrae remains the ideal way to play Quake today; the updated high-resolution textures and various "next gen" effects are definitely worth more than the spectacular lighting/shadow effects of Darkplaces. However, if you are too troubled by the crashes, then go for Darkplaces; despite the less exciting graphics and some fps drops, you’ll find a stable and satisfying game.
