Oh, sorry Iside, I thought you were older, I wonder why....

His latest album isn't bad, mature, pleasant, well-produced, but I don't really feel inclined to play it again (3.5). He has never made a 5-star album for me, not even his best, Solitude Standing is (4), and even less so that other one, pleasant and more "lively," 99.9°F. (3.5/4). I must have heard it, but honestly, I don't remember it...

Isis, aren't you older than me?

No, Lolli isn't so "difficult," VoodooChild, quite the opposite. It's, for example, much harder to contextualize and "understand" De André, since you mentioned him. Lolli is simply less universal, more tied to a personal vision deeply rooted in his historical period and in the "common feeling" of a generation, a sort of "leftist" nihilism. And yes, seen from here, from this immeasurable distance, it brings a smile. Tinged with bitterness, but a smile after all is what it inspires in me, a kind of tenderness. How old are you, VoodooChild?

"How would you fit in," my friend would say. I too - "a dragged-out song, but vocally tightly wound by extended time": you're a nice riddle;))

Maybe you should read the review of Sickoakes: there are many samples, like in most of my (I can't use the little program anymore!!) so you can get an idea.. - these essential albums lists are always, for one reason or another, very debatable. I don't know any that I agree with.

I was already intrigued by the review of a very young user (what happened to Hobbit?) some time ago, about another one of their albums. This one raises the bar, and since Bresson's phrase is absolutely right, I'm looking for the record. You're a great new "acquisition" for Debaser.

Excellent read, congratulations, album on the list. I had already enjoyed your writing in Souled Americans, and I liked your page more than the album (less evocative and weaker than your lines suggested). In this case, I feel I can assume that, to my ears, they will sound more cohesive (page and album) - Thanks.

@Melissa: Post-rock instrumental: SICKOAKES: Seawards (2006) -- New Soul: TERRY CALLIER: Speak Your Peace (2002) -- New Folk/Soul-Songwriter: FINK: Biscuits For Breakfast (2006) -- Experimental/NuProgressive: ZAAR: Zaar (2006) -- Rock/Folk/Psychedelia: SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE: The Sun Awaken (2006) -- Gentle electronics: HELYOS: Eingya (2006) ---- I feel like recommending these to you if those genres (always just indicative) interest you. I've excluded some weirder stuff and jazz and "related" things because they don't seem to be your cup of tea.

Every now and then on DeBaser, Lolli reappears, surprisingly. He was, centuries ago, for a few years, my "travel companion", finding ample space in the anxieties of my adolescence. Reading about these albums today corresponds to a kind of flashback, with all the possible implications... It's curious that when I think back, the lyrics of many of his songs come back to me in full, even after 30 years... Therefore, I wouldn't know how to rate him.
