I fully subscribe to Floydman's outburst; Manalishi, I would say we're on the same page here except for "Crest"; I just got it (still on vinyl, was it '88?) and I didn't dislike it at first, but then I noticed it was one of the least listened to works. I've said it before, maybe it's due to a slight shift in the overall setting, or perhaps the excessive similarity of Anderson's voice to Mark Knopfler's, but this work always leaves me a bit cold. "Broadsword," on the other hand, is really another thing. I suppose we shouldn't underestimate the compositional and performing contribution of the talented Peter John Vettese.

Indeed, it may seem redundant to still pause and write about the deeds of the crimson king and his court nearly forty years later. Someone has already said that everything that needed to be written and understood has perhaps already been written and understood. It is also true that everyone, or almost everyone, reading these lines has had the opportunity to listen to this masterpiece and form their own idea about it, sometimes very personal indeed. Perhaps it is this very "personalization" that can create interpretive and emotional contrasts. But there should be nothing wrong with this; and above all, it should not generate any acrimony. Pretazzo launches and re-launches the belonging to one genre or another, while Cofras (whose interventions seem to me to be driven by common sense, by the way) counters with his point of view. Personally, though I have already supported this position elsewhere, I suppose it is an idle matter of façade. What I mean is: once it is established whether KC belong to rock or not, what do we gain from it? Is it not much better to move away from the sterile perspective of labels and definitions to experience music for what it represents tout court? Joe Strummer, perhaps even unnecessarily if you like, expressed his "feeling" about the magic of this work and did so as best as he could. It is his right, considering the good form and laudable substance; even if there was no need for another examination of this work, perhaps doing it made him happy. And maybe someone else as well. In conclusion, I endorse Cofras's suggestion regarding the reading of Cesare Rizzi’s discreet volume on the topic of "progressive (and underground)"; I add that in the same series there is also a similarly interesting little book on the folk and folk-rock (or folk revival... what a disaster with genres...) scene of the '70s. Enjoy your reading.

I don't really believe, Manalishi, that you are a c...... (even if you managed to make me smile.....): If you took them that way, you must have had your good reasons, of course. (And good for you, maybe!). @ Roby: I agree with Manalishi about the choice of period; definitely the early VDGG are more interesting (and dark), although episodes from the second period like "Still Life" are truly exceptional. In this regard, I recommend all fans of the band (in case they haven't already, mind you) to purchase "The Box," a quadruple mix (originals, outtakes, live) released five years ago, I believe, and compiled by Hammill himself. Along with the photos, there's a kind of diary from those years. Unmissable. (There are also the VDGG live in Rimini in '73, I think).

@fenniblues: it's nice to read that the way you are discovering the subtleties, the details, the intricacies of the GG now is the same way I discovered (and was amazed by) them thirty years ago. The beauty is that it still happens to me every time I listen to them... For the rest, I would say that your "shifts" in styles are definitely a great sign and a good omen. Keep it up. ;)
