George Benson Beyond The Blue Horizon
Voto:
Since we all love Blue Horizon and therefore have all tasted something special (even Lumpy Gavy wasn't bad, but among those to mention from the classic period...), let's not be superficial. With Quincy Jones, Benson created only the first album of his "pop conversion," and if only they had all remained at the level of that magnificent record. Give Me The Night is one of the most perfect intersections between guitar jazz and smooth soul in delightful disco music (but everyone at the time was dealing with disco; it wasn't a crime, from the Stones' Some Girls to James Brown's Original Disco Man to McCartney's Goodbye Tonight to Earth, Wind & Fire's Boogie Wonderland to Fleetwood Mac, etc., etc.). And even just "Walking In Space" could be a good reason to stop hating Quincy Jones. Furthermore, the pop turn allowed us to see that Benson, besides being a brilliant guitarist, is also an EXCELLENT singer (previously almost entirely undervalued). It's his fault, not Quincy’s, that in the immediate albums following Give Me The Night (like the obscene 20/20), he started to walk on his own, awkwardly stumbling over himself...

Perhaps you haven't listened to "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" or "The Life Pursuit by..." otherwise you couldn't claim a non-existent decline. After this album, I too shared your opinion; there was indeed a moment of crisis. But I had the chance to change my mind thanks to the two albums mentioned above. The storm seems to have passed, and with flying colors too.

One question: what is your opinion, blackcrow, on the latest "patience"? Compared to this, what about LWP or Faith... can you share your thoughts if you’ve listened to it?

great courage, great review. Excellent levels of quality, and even if you are a bit biased towards the album, that's the beauty of it...Older can come across as gaudy and pompous, too ostentatiously in search of an elegant and mature pop. But I repeat again: that's its beauty.
Billy Joel Glass Houses
Voto:
Most likely, I will be there on the 31st... and it doesn't seem relevant to me if Billy Joel won't be able to gather the same number of people as his predecessors under the Colosseum... we go for the music, right?? Glass Houses one of his top five: after having made with 52nd Street almost a carbon copy of The Stranger, he needed to prove to himself and the audience that he could explore other, new shades. He succeeded brilliantly.
Happy Mondays Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches
Voto:
Madchester nostalgia...an album from my ideal list, rightly stolen from the usual Soc...actually, a bit different from the usual, a bizarre fusion of the Soc from fifteen years ago and the Soc of today, two personalities in comparison, with their respective myths reflecting back at each other...Shaun wasn't saved by wellerisms like Ian Brown, in his own way he was a fragile pure...and this music, while slightly dated today, sounds like an Arcadia to be reclaimed without hesitation, without deadlines. One of your best reviews, because it's different and estranged from your usual (wonderful) attitudes...we've also discovered that you were/are a timid rebel...but you know we like you just the way you are, right?
Alphaville First Harvest
Voto:
Socrates much more precise, just, and correct... but when enthusiasm takes over, one can justify even a few excessive celebrations... especially since Alphaville is one of those bands that either you forget or they stay in your musical imagination due to a latent sense of affection. That sympathy that captures you when there’s a small group, a small artist who barely manages to get a moment, maybe two of glory, and then gets sucked into oblivion, more or less deserved. And it’s nice to know that that little meteor has touched others too... anyway, the album "Forever Young" truly contains some "little masterpieces."
