As Omahaceleb, I disagree with the statement that improvisation in jazz would be an end in itself (the first one that comes to mind is Ayler, but also partly Mingus). Great review, full of information. I'll go download the record as soon as I can.

I'm doubtful about the significance attributed to this album - regarding the claim of being the first to narrate sexuality so explicitly, my doubts increase when I revisit PJ Harvey’s Dry and Rid of Me (the first of the two released a couple of years before Phair's debut). In any case, I will listen to this album soon to form an opinion about it. Precise and exhaustive review, without being too didactic.
