Ross Robinson has succeeded in ruining that masterpiece of sound that Machine Head had with the great Colin Richardson (who is a genius in his field, on par with Terry Date)! I agree with you about the so-called geniuses (one randomly, Reznor... overrated) and I too am convinced that at a certain point the ideas ran out for MH! But this album is a small monument and honestly, I don't see where you see these not-so-original ideas...
