Laura Nyro Eli And The Thirteenth Confession
Voto:
Hey! Laura Nyro on DB! Thanx ulysses. Nyro is truly a complex and interesting artist, someone who wanted to have full control over her records. Did you know that she was one of the first artists to include lyrics in the "sleeve" of the LP? In this album, it seems she even convinced the producer to use scented ink for the first copies (?!). Also, on this LP, there was a song (Emmie) that suggested a lesbian love, which was really out of logic for the times. You're right to say she didn't get the success she deserved, but it wasn't her priority; she was just focused on making her music. When Geffen (who was only 24 at the time) asked to sign her, the old producer replied, "Forget it, she’s crazy!" It should also be said that despite her somewhat gloomy image, she was capable of creating melodies of unmatched brightness. Last anecdote: when Laura goes to Clive Davis (the mega record producer) for an audition, she forces him to turn off all the lights in the studio and listen to her at the piano illuminated only by the glow of a TV. Needless to say, she convinces him. Often in her lyrics, there are clear echoes of social protest, like when she writes "Save the Country" after the assassinations of Kennedy and Martin Luther King. Among her openly admiring fans are also Rickie Lee Jones, Suzanne Vega, and Joni Mitchell.

A classy album, I also recommend the latest one by Ron Sexsmith (the 'cocco di costello') which keeps getting better with each CD... 5 stars also for mentioning Randy the master!

Krisma The Best Of (Nuove Incisioni)

back then I liked them a bit too (and Christina used to tease me a lot), really not very Italian... between the surakambo of odrdk and ksmgbr and the thought of Chris's little feet from back then, it makes me naturally ask (to those who know) whether the two krisma are still a 'couple' despite all these years that have passed...

Dear Odradek, perhaps the ending of the review was a bit too definitive! :o) Thanks for the score. Thanks also to Kosmogabri for the non-complimentary vote...

sylvian1982, I like the album (4balls are not bad) and I recommend it. You're right, around here it's still hard to find, mine arrives directly from the USA. In this CD, there are perhaps more purely pop elements than there were on "Breath," and in some ways, it's a bit more traditional and at the same time less "genre," perhaps even more ambitious. For sure, it's less homogeneous than "Breath" (while you're listening to it, you can't help but think about how much is packed inside). I can assure you that if you like his voice (I really like it), you won't be disappointed...

hey hal, I saw that you like Patricia Barber (among others). I also want to point out that on Kurt's CD the first track is Minuano by PatMet (with lyrics by Elling). At this point, I believe Elling won't disappoint you :o)... have a great summer

primiballi you are right: Marc Ribot is really amazing, so who is going to write a "marcribotic" review? x odradek: there was a time when I was really into the fante (with those from marcosymarcos), now it's a bit in the background but I can't help feeling a sympathetic attraction to his biography.

Damn! I'm annoyed that I can't give more than 5 stars here. I would give at least 6 to frnkzpp...
