CCCP - Fedeli alla linea 1964-1985. Affinità-divergenze fra il compagno Togliatti e noi...

Yes, Odra, you made yourself understood :) and I took the liberty of posting that comment here instead of in the other reviews about CCCP because I feel that the interlocutors here are less "extremist" than before :) After all, I can't express myself fully; I am an outsider to certain dynamics, to certain "messages." All I can say is that the guitars of Epica Etica are phenomenal, extraordinary (Moroccolo and Canali), some of the most abrasive sounds I've heard in Italy; perhaps that's why I prefer it to the other albums. As for the iconography... I'm sorry, but I've never really liked it. It's like the Che t-shirts, same story. Or the Zapatista slogans in social centers. Then there's also a personal issue: I was dating someone from Milan, an old-school communist passionate about CCCP, and when we went to Berlin, he couldn't do anything better than give me pins and communist-themed gadgets from nostalgic stalls, insisting that I wear them (with a mini skirt, communist but still a "rooster," huh?), during the long walks he made me take around monuments to the fallen in Potsdam (talking about mausoleums, Bogus...)... and maybe that's what made me allergic to certain iconography, which I also find ugly, truly ugly, sad and discouraging, like some Nazi-fascist stuff. And when the CCCP freed themselves from it... what a liberation indeed.

I knew this review would unleash a whirlwind of comments, so I’m adding mine hoping not to be inappropriate (even though I know I will be). For foreigners (that is, non-Italians), the CCCP were seen as an endemic Italian creature, a kind of Frankenstein that embodied all the political and social contradictions of Italy at that time (both left and right). The impression then was of a 'cultural' phenomenon... fascinating, perhaps musically engaging, but 'typical', all Italian. "Italian punk," in short. Today, I greatly respect Ferretti and Zamboni, and the others (Maroccolo, etc.), but back then I would have preferred a sobriety of symbols and wild gestures; all this visual aggression made them a bit... ridiculous? Pompous? Exaggerated and therefore not credible? When Etica Epica was released, finally a CCCP album came out with an "honest" cover, that is, a photo of the room where they recorded the album. In conclusion: I agree with Josi_, music for the sake of music.

The theme you raise is very interesting (by the way, you write really well!). Yes, back then there were clear distinctions. However, I must say that in the mainstream of '79, some remarkable albums were released: (I’m going from memory) Chic, Elton John (single Part Time Love), Earth Wind & Fire, Billy Joel, Bee Gees (Tragedy), Abba (single Chiquitita), Meat Loaf, Village People, Anita Ward, Donna Summer (Hot Stuff), etc. For those with more demanding tastes, there were not just Supertramp, but also bands like Dire Straits (Sultan Of Swing), Blondie, The Clash, Ian Dury & The Blockheads, The Police, Joe Jackson, Sparks, and many more... Personally, I would have chosen Dire Straits; if I’m not mistaken, back then, in the European charts, Dire Straits were placed among the top ten, while Supertramp never made it.

mmmmmmm, ok maybe you’re right. Let’s say that if this album had come out 15-20 years ago, it would have been more on point...

This is the most pop album of the great F, conceived to finger the delicate ears of all the posers high on coke and Canadian Club. The most famous but not among his best, although I agree with the reviewer with the badass nickname, it’s indispensable.

Today there’s a humidity that clings to you, heavy, magma-like, painful. We could use a bit of light, fresh, dense rain, just like this review. Beautiful photograph Josi_
