I agree, great craft, but little reward. When you know the subject well, you perform better... I'm convinced you realize that too, right?

Stefano, it's a crime to leave it in that store; you absolutely have to take it away from him. And when you buy it, tell the shopkeeper – from me – that he's an asshole (but not in a dull sense)... putting a record like that at 12 euros is like putting it on sale, is he an idiot? This is stuff that never goes out of fashion... it has no expiration date!
Amadou & Mariam Dimanche a Bamako

I would recommend "Les Années maliennes, vol 1-5" (Warner). It’s a collection of 5 CDs, and I realize it’s quite an expense, so I’d suggest it only for true enthusiasts (if there are any...). This collection contains almost all their recordings from the period when they were in Mali (in the 80s, before moving to Paris, so they have a bit of a roots flavor and the recordings are so-so). During the Malian period, their cassettes were pirated by the hundreds of thousands and sold under the counter in markets all over Africa. If Amadou and Mariam had received just one dollar for each pirated cassette, they would be millionaires today, and rightly so: they have given voice, hope, and optimism to all the handicapped in Africa (who are millions and millions of individuals, for obvious reasons, amid wars and devastating diseases). That’s no small feat. Forgive me for going a bit off on a tangent, Punny, but I wanted to say something about the incredible experience of this "blind" couple who managed to "see the light," just to complete the review; please don't misinterpret me, as I agree with you: the album in question has a production that is too polished for their standard, and in this case, the Manuchao-esque touch annoys me, flattening everything out, even if it has the merit of introducing them to a larger audience; indeed, it’s likely that the intentions are more "commercial," that is, "more business." But this is an old and worn discourse, let's change the tune, joy :)

Magnifica Tell, phenomenal album... One of my absolute records of the '90s. You can't give a rating to this, it's immeasurable.

Well done, an excellent report, critical yet well-argued.

Well, I remain amazed. I had promised myself for a long time to read this review calmly because I was interested, and now I've appreciated it a lot, happy to find targeted comments and, moreover, an intriguing in-depth analysis (which saved me the time of a Google search, not to be underestimated, indeed)... but at the end of the reading (of the entire forum), I am left only with a gray bitterness. What a pity.

I also connect this record to my old one. It’s been ages since I last heard it; I wonder what it would be like to listen to it now with hindsight, if I would still like it...

I believe that sooner or later I have to listen to the Blac Moses Trampled. If you like them, I'll like them too!

I also prefer the second one, but both are masterpieces. An intense review, comme il faut for this album.
