One must not underestimate "Ostalgie," just as one should not reduce the former East Germany to just two realities such as the SED and the Stasi... Factors like unemployment and the rise of the far-right in former communist countries are playing their dirty part today... I quote, "Since 1991, 712,000 citizens from the eastern Länder have emigrated to the western part of the country due to unemployment. In December 2004, the unemployment rate in the new five Länder rose to 20.9%, while in the west it hovers around 10.2%. And this situation is increasingly reflected in the election results. In the last local elections in Saxony (east) in September of the same year, the former communist party PDS received 23.6% of the votes, and the far-right party NPD managed to convince a significant 9.2% of the voters." In light of all this, it is normal for the Ossis (those from the east) to feel like second-class citizens. Regret arises from frustration and helplessness. Then of course, there’s also business; Ostalgie is profitable, with Trabants, for example, becoming objects of rampant cult today (even here in Switzerland). (I’m going randomly, I’m cooking in the meantime, um, sausages and potato salad, I was inspired) (my grandmother came to Switzerland during the Second World War, thank goodness, otherwise I wouldn't exist now...)
