Simple Minds Empires And Dance
Voto:
The Simple Minds are all about the double whammy New Gold Dream, Sparkle In The Rain, albums that were overrated at the time and are underrated today. Classic 80s albums, with all their pros and cons. I've heard this, but I don't like it. A raw album.

I have Esthero's previous album (Breath From Another) and I find it to be an excellent record. I'm glad you reviewed this album because I've been planning to buy it since it was released, roughly at the end of June. It doesn't seem to have been published in the EEC, so it should only be found online. Honestly, from what I've read around the web, it sounded like a better album than how you reviewed it. Talk to you later...

Grass, while I'm at it, I'll give you my personal ranking of the "true" Genesis:
1) Foxtrot
2) The Lam Lies Down On Broadway
3) Selling England By The Pound
4) Trespass
5) Nursery Crime
For me, the Genesis are all here and in this order. What do you think?

Of course, Grass, the decline of Genesis has really stuck in your craw. After all, the Genesis (as you and I understand them) were Peter Gabriel, and Peter Gabriel was Genesis. Personally, I find A Trick Of The Tail barely acceptable, and by Wind and Wuthering I find it to be of paroxysmal boredom. I bought Duke back then on cassette, and I remember that I didn't even dislike it. Today it's a dusty relic. But I was young then and my musical knowledge was very limited (also and especially because money was tight). Do you really want to torture us with Abacab too? I don't know if you read Mucchio Extra, but they listed Abacab among the 100 supreme horrors of rock music, and it’s even well placed.

Wow Psych, you mentioned one of the most beautiful albums, not only of the sixties, but of all time. In my humble opinion, and I'm risking a never-ending stream of insults, even the Beatles never released an album of the caliber of Forever Changes. This is an album that has aged well. There are passages and brass sections that sound like they’ve come from the current records of Belle & Sebastian. I don't agree about the Beach Boys. Pet Sounds is still great today. I've never really listened to the Moody Blues seriously, except for a few songs here and there. They’ve always been pointed out as the most extreme and therefore deleterious part of the progressive movement. Returning to Love, it’s incomprehensible how they managed to create an album like Forever Changes and then, almost, nothing else.

The sentimental aspect in cases like "Surrealistic Pillow" doesn’t touch me at all. It’s an album I discovered decades later. In '67, I was in diapers. It's also true that they are the foundations of rock upon which everyone will eventually cling, but it is also true that in 1967, little to nothing had yet been experimented with; many territories were untouched and the possibilities for exploration were almost infinite. Just think of everything that has come after. They were the pioneers. Today, I’m not saying that everything has been done and/or experimented with, but certainly the chances of "breaking through" are much lower.

A record that is a child of its time. Hearing it again today inevitably sounds dated. You still had the courage to review an album like this, risking a lack of objectivity. Almost all the psychedelic records from the late sixties are praised, but I reiterate, they haven't aged very well.
Vinicio Capossela Il ballo di San Vito
Voto:
Unfortunately, like Tom Waits and Paolo Conte, the good Vinicio is also part of the group of musicians that I have a hard time digesting. I have this album, and I’ve listened to it a maximum of three or four times. I also include Guccini (another almost untouchable), but I truly hear very little music in their albums. The lyrics have always enchanted me only marginally. Then, maybe it’s those tarantellas, polkas, waltzes, etc. that just don’t touch my soul. What can you do...
Brilliant review, as usual.
Porcupine Tree Deadwing

It’s quite striking to see in your profile that your favorite band is Porcupine Tree. I’ve been following music for a long time (I’m ten years older than you), and I had only heard their name but never listened to anything until a few months ago. How strange. Anyway, in my quest to find their albums, I’m unfortunately discovering that Stupid Dream and Recordings are elusive. Another oddity.
