Of course there is Denilson (Petrucci from 2007) who is (almost) all smoke and no fire, there is Inzaghi (the Kurt Cobain) who is extremely overrated, scores 2 goals in the final while playing a terrible match, and every time he gets the ball, he’s afraid to face his opponent head-on... and if he gets tackled, he falls miserably, whining as if they’ve destroyed a cruciate ligament (metaphor of the suicidal Cobain)... then there are Kakà (Symphony X, Orphaned Land, Aghora) endowed with sublime technique, but always functional to team play, capable of creating "game" (music) and dismantling any defense (critique)... in the end there are the Maldini (Rush, PFM) who reach 39 years (30 and 40 years of career) and still have the class of the good old days... in the end, Nirvana sold a lot, but ask the teenagers of '92 if they still listen to Nirvana today...

I just had to read that you went from Dream Theater to Sonic Youth to stop reading... tastes are tastes, but I find Sonic Youth, Pixies, Melvins and the like crap... apart from Alice In Chains and a bit of Pearl Jam... alternative rock from the late 80s to early 90s is crap... six years ago I would have let Kurt Cobain fuck me up the ass... I was 14 :) and my music tastes have definitely improved... let’s leave Dream Theater aside... I've already talked about them in another review and shared my thoughts on this album... Progressive Metal in 2007 offers much better... Formless by Aghora above all...

Opeth have invented a genre... they have synthesized two different worlds into a single harmony... the extreme and the sweet... inner rage and fragile melancholy...
Orchid: the first album by Opeth, all songs over 10 minutes... spectral arpeggios and furiously Black riffing seasoned with gothic tones, yet without falling into banality... the age of the leader Akerfeldt is 21... brilliant compositions... one must listen to understand the art that lies behind the raw and dirty sound of distorted guitars... not to mention the brilliant bass lines...
Morningrise: the following year, perhaps the best... the structure of the previous album evolves... a similar style... but the band's songwriting ability is evident in the long suite Black Rose Immortal (spectacular) and the acoustic piece To Bid You Farewell... decadent, sad, imbued with the '70s...
My Arms Your Hearse: shorter songs... less introspective tracks, but more dynamic... perhaps something is lost, but it remains a top-notch album... genius incursions of clean sounds... growl now perfected... powerful and understandable... beautiful lyrics...
Still Life: Concept Album. Further improves on the style of the previous one... Spectacular is the ballad Benighted...
Blackwater Park: production almost perfect... a varied album full of meanings... more commercial, but despite a slightly more standard song format, tracks like "The Drapery Falls" and "Bleak" are a spectacle, while the two acoustics from the limited edition open the doors to what follows...
Damnation: anachronistic, but genius. A 70s progressive rock album with the help of Steven Wilson. As communicative as few, essential arpeggios, simple yet fantastic solos, background keyboards, and a splendid voice.
Deliverance: Brutal. The band's artistic touch is always present, but it comes off a bit challenging. However, it features phenomenal tracks like A Fair Judgement and the title track. Perhaps the weakest of the band, but the quality standard remains very high...
Ghost Reveries: Prog. Also with jazzy hints. Blues that comes into contact with Death Metal... A unique style, Opeth are now absolute leaders... They have invented a way of doing progressive, starting from a death-black folkish sound, they have arrived after 10 years at a progressive Death Metal with a thousand facets. I didn't have much time, but these are my reasons...

The best progressive band of the last 15 years, even though they don't stick to a certain kind of progressive, is Opeth... they have an amazing genius as a leader... those guys have incredible technique but they serve the songs without overdoing it...
