The Magic Numbers The Magic Numbers

Nice nice. They also remind me a bit of the "dusty American Southern rock" tradition (oh my, what have I coined?!?!) revived by bands like Kings Of Leon in recent years, and the first part of the album makes me think a bit of Grease! Spot on review!

Yes, but it wasn't their fault or Jarmush's... it was the ignition coil.

Hi Francis... so you know I like how you write, but to me, this album currently represents the biggest musical disappointment of the year, closely followed by Devendra Banhart, Nada Surf, and Sigur Ròs. I find the album veeeery boring and predictably poppy (oh man, I mean, the pop of Caught By The Fuzz, Late In The Day, and Mary, but maybe even Grace if I'm being kind, is light-years away in comparison...). The Supergrass were good at doing only one thing: energetic songs on the edge of pop-punk alternated with beautifully crafted ballads. This time they've only gone for lackluster ballads (even though they’ve put effort into the arrangements perhaps like never before).

Francy, sorry, I don't mean to be unlikable at all costs, but I think the story of "nice but there's better out there" isn't exactly a wise take. It's just a way to summarize in a post an entire review of a group that might have released decent albums, with appreciable singles but far from turning into a masterpiece. That's all. In short, I believe that three-star albums are sadly the vast majority in the rock world today. It's becoming rarer to fully slam an album (nowadays across all types of rock, from indie to pop rock to often fake lo-fi to nu metal) since the productions are at very high and advanced levels. So, the "basic" standard has been raised, in my opinion. However, the flip side is that so much is produced, and so many bands often come out as SUPER derivative that the masterpiece is a mirage. ;D Well, this is how I see it, which is definitely not the truth for some things...
Best regards.

It's always like this...often the most unfortunate ones are the ones who can play better...except for a guy named Hendrix who seemed to please women quite a bit and I've heard he could play his instrument pretty well (I used the word instrument and not guitar on purpose!) ;D

I like this review. It perfectly reflects what the WS have become... . Before, no one cared about them, and now everyone's crazy for them. I saw them live in Rome, and I have to say the concert was nothing short of exhilarating (a girl even made me bleed on my arm...that bitch)!!!! Anyway...a pretty mediocre record. Their masterpiece remains White B.Cells...forget about elephant.

Well... whether the Oneida are a group of superior caliber in every way (including aesthetically?) is something to be seen compared to the Constantines, honestly in my opinion...

Okay, then I promise that if I find her debut (gold is her real debut, right?) at a reasonable price, I'll get it... I was saying that in the previous post because, ultimately, rock'n'roll and love is hell left me a bit "dry in the mouth" while I was reading outrageous things in the newspapers. That said, I really like the review ;D

main influences OF Jesus and Mary according to the youth: Stooges, Syd Barrett, Velvet Underground, Beatles
main influences FROM Jesus and Mary according to the youth: Depeche Mode, Duke Spirit, BRMC (at least the first two albums), Radio Dept and a myriad of bands that are mostly American now claiming to love the Pixies and Modest Mouse while hiding this little record under their pillows...
