It's summer, and naturally, the summer albums are coming out.
Fortunately, in England, summer albums have nothing to do with gasolina or children going "oh," but rather with bands like the Magic Numbers.
Evidently, the Magic Numbers thought it through: enthusiasts of vocal harmonies, they quickly noticed that these feature excellently in both white and black musical traditions. In the first case, you have to trace back to glorious groups such as The Beach Boys, The Byrds, and The Mamas & The Papas, forever symbols of the sunny side of American white music. In the second case, you mainly encounter the soulful tradition of Motown. The idea of combining them is therefore natural.
Add a dash of indie attitude, the most pop and carefree kind (think Belle & Sebastian school), and the fact that they always present their chubby faces with a 32-tooth smile in every photo, and there's no doubt that the "feel good factor" of this self-titled debut is at an all-time high.
There's no need for extensive technical discussions: here, the purpose of the Magic Numbers is to pop the CD in the player and make you feel good. And you do feel good, right from the start; Forever Lost has one of those irresistible melodies that get stuck in your head and won't leave, and even after spending all day singing along, you find yourself playing it again in the evening.
The fact that the second half of the album decidedly shifts towards indie-soul ballads (between Motown soul and the folk of Mojave 3) in no way undermines the album's value. On the contrary. Too many fast and catchy melodies would have eventually tired the listener, so it's intriguing that the first and second halves of the album are so different.
And the harmonies are so well-crafted that even the less successful episodes slide by pleasantly. Of course, there will be those who turn up their noses, accusing the Magic Numbers of being too fussy, too polished, too saccharine. Sure, it's not a revolutionary or innovative album. That's not their goal, after all. It's an album that stands or falls on the ground of melodies and vocal harmonies. And in this field, the album is undoubtedly a winner.
It's summer. Even the indie kid has the right to be happy.
That's why we have the Magic Numbers!
Tracklist Lyrics and Videos
01 Mornings Eleven (05:34)
You're in denial, you're in denial
And I know
Well what's my name, well what's my name ?
I don't know
Baby if you telephone
Maybe I can meet you in the morning
Call me if you're on your own
And maybe I can meet you in the morning
You're in denial, you're in denial
And I know
Well what's my name, well what's my name?
I don't know
Baby if you telephone
Maybe I can meet you in the morning
Call me if you're on your own
And maybe I can meet you in the morning
Mornings eleven, the feelings are severed
I can't feel anything at all
But I would die for you
Oh I would die for you
All that I've ever seen
All that I've ever been
All that I've ever was,
I would die for you
Oh I would die for you
I had it all
But I never thought I did
No, no, no, no, I never thought I did
I had it all
But I never thought I did
No, no, no, no I never thought I did
You're in denial, you're in denial
And I know
Well whats my name, well whats my name
I don't know
Baby if you telephone
Maybe I can meet you in the morning
Call me if you're on your own
And maybe I can meet you in the morning
Die for you
Die for you
I had it all
But I never thought I did
No, no, no, no, I never thought I did
I had it all
But I never thought I did
No, no, no, no I never thought I did
I had it all
02 Forever Lost (04:11)
Darling, what you gonna do now
Now that you noticed
It all went wrong
I've been, I've been thinking
That you don't know me anymore
Don't let the sun be the one
To change you baby
I wanna learn how to lie
If I'm to know
Cos I wanna go where the people go
Cos I'm forever lost
Darling, what you gonna say now
Now that you noticed
It all went wrong
Looks like I'm driving
My friends all crazy
They say that they don't know me anymore
Don't let the sun be the one
To change you baby
I wanna learn how to lie
If I'm to know
Cos I wanna go where the people go
Cos I'm forever lost
Oh yeah I'm forever lost
Looks like it all went wrong [x4]
What am I to do
What am I to do
Don't let the sun be the one
To change you baby
I wanna learn how to lie
If I'm to know
Cos I wanna go where the people go
Cos I'm forever lost
Oh yeah I'm forever lost
Darling what you gonna do now
Now that you noticed
It all went wrong
Now that you noticed
Now that you noticed
03 The Mule (05:11)
How many times must you call me in the morning
Before I wake up
How many times must I look at other girls
Before we break up
And how many times must I criticise every single thing that you do
Before you,
Before you let me know
Before you let me go
You really should've known
That I'm a no good gambling man with the wrong hand
Who's been hurt so many times
Why don't you look him in the eye
Oh you won't see nothing at all
How many times must I stumble in drunk
Before you scold me
Why is it you have to turn out all the lights
Before you hold me
And how many years of fears and falls, that broke my balls
Well I guess you never told me...
But before you let me know
Before you let me go
You really shouldn't know
That I'm a no-good, used-up, bruised and fucked-up boy
Who gets beat up just by looking at you
I'm a lonely soul, lost every single thing I've ever did own
But I never owned you
Go on and look him in the eye
Oh you just might see him cry
Oh you just might see him smile...
One more drink and I'll be fine
One more girl to take you off my mind [x3]
One more girl and I'll be fine
One more drink to take you off my mind
04 Long Legs (03:22)
Long legs,
Don't give me no head rush in the morning
Oh baby, it's bad too bad
I don't think I'll ever see your face again
And I don't wanna lose your love
And I don't wanna choose just one
Cos I've been having too much fun
Oh
Oh it's bad too bad
I don't think I'll ever feel the same again
Oh baby, I'll beg I'll beg
Cos I found it but I don't know what it is
And I don't wanna lose your love
And I don't wanna choose just one
Cos I've been having too much fun
Oh but it's gone..
And I don't wanna lose your love
And I don't wanna choose
Cos I've been having too much fun
Oh but it's gone
Long legs don't give me no head rush in the morning
Oh baby baby, I'll beg I'll beg
Cos you're leaving and I won't know how it ends
And I don't wanna lose your love
And I don't wanna choose just one
Cos I've been having too much fun
Oh but it's gone
And I don't wanna lose your love
And I don't wanna choose just one
Cos I've been having too much fun
Oh but it's gone
05 Love Me Like You (04:50)
Don't let your white dress wear you out
Oh it hurts to look in your eyes
cos honey I can see him
All my life
I'd hurt the ones I'd loved
Oh but baby you can turn it round
She don't love me like you
She don't know what you do
And it's so hard
She don't care what you say
So just say it, say it anyway
It's so hard
All my life, they tried to push me down
Oh but baby you can turn it round
Oh but honey I still see him
Don't let your friends tell you why
Cos I'm a bad, bad, bad ....
I'm the one
Oh but baby you can turn it on
She don't love me like you
She don't know what you do
And it's so hard
She don't care what you say
So just say it, say it anyway
It's so hard
All those years gone by
I only wanna find a way
To make it hard for you [x2]
You'll never forget it
The way that she let....
She don't feel the same
I only wanna find a way
To make it hard for you [x2]
She'll never forget it
The way that she let
She don't feel no pain
I only wanna find a way
To make it up to you
She'll never forget it
The way that she let
She don't feel the same
I only wanna find a way
I only wanna find
I only wanna find
She don't love me like you [x4]
She don't love
She don't
06 Which Way to Happy (04:27)
Awake all you sleepy heads
I come crawling
the last on the road
be the first to be heard
Tell me a joke and I will love you
Pour me a drink and I'm yours
Good luck to anyone
Who ever felt sure
Of a real life romance
There's no beaten cause surrounding me now
There's no bleeding heart
And I don't wanna know you right now
But make time to show me your scars
Which way to happy ?
And which way to hell
For I think I lost direction
When you threw me out of bed
Well are you sure there's a heaven
For I'd rather be
A bad, bad...
I wish I was in a suitcase on my way back home
To you there's a light ahead
I keep on talking to myself
God, can you hear me?
There's no beaten cause surrounding me now
There's no bleeding heart
And I don't know you right now...
But let's walk on water to help heal the love
For all we contained was once just written of
And all of the dances are rituals of which you were
And who's dancing now
Well it's too late to learn
Too late too late to learn
Oh it's too late to learn
No I don't want to have to be the one that has to lose you
No I don't want to have to be the one that has to lose you
No I don't want to have to be the one that has to lose you
08 Don't Give Up the Fight (02:59)
She's the kinda girl who looks like she had it all
Then everything started to fall
She turned and she said well
I look in your eyes but honey I can see nothing at all
And everybody's starting to know
She turned and she said to me
Baby baby please
Don't give up the fight
I saw you dance tonight
Baby baby please
Don't give up the fight
I saw you dance tonight
Well she's the kinda girl who looks like she had it all
Then everything started to fall
She turned and she said well
Nothing you do can ever be seen to turn me on
And everybody's starting to know
Well she turned and she looked and she said
[Baby baby please
Don't give up the fight
I saw you dance tonight] x4
10 Wheels on Fire (04:03)
Wheels on fire
Why don't you
Tell me lies
You ought to
Wheels on fire
Why don't you say goodbye
Well there's a light
And there's a hope
Come swing me baby
From this here rope
I sold you a lie
And prayed that maybe
Someday you'd return it
Lord knows I've earnt it
I keep finding words that leave you - I told you I don't mind
Something tells me I'm not meant to - I told you I don't mind
I keep finding words that leave you
Wheels on fire
Why don't you
Tell me lies
You ought to
Wheels on fire
Why don't you say goodbye
Well there's a light
And there's a hope
Come swing me baby
From this here rope
I sold you a lie
And preyed that maybe
Someday you'd return it
Lord knows I've earnt it
I keep finding words that leave you - I told you I don't mind
Something tells me I'm not meant to - I told you I don't mind
I keep finding words that leave you
Wheels on fire
Why don't you
Tell me lies
You ought to
Wheels on fire
Why don't you say goodbye [x4]
