Depeche Mode Exciter

Exciter is an album that is absolutely not up to par with the previous ones.
Dave no longer has the voice of his time; it's already a miracle that he hasn't died from an overdose.
Since Alan Wilder left the band, the production quality has dropped because now one person composes the songs, another sings them, and yet another plays babysitter to the singer.
Martin Gore (whom I do admire) can no longer manage to keep spinning that E minor arpeggio with the acoustic.
The splendid riff of Personal Jesus has been sadly recycled to give birth to Dream On. For crying out loud!
I'll save just Free Love and The Dead of Night, which has some faint industrial reminiscence, but everything else...

Okay, I borrowed it and listened to it non-stop for three days.
I confirm my initial impressions (resulting from a fleeting listen at Feltrinelli); it’s a great album, I definitely like it.
The tracks that grabbed me the most are Mondo Cattivo, Bellezza (scary strings), and i poeti (the beautiful also for the lyrics).
I also noticed the issue with the drums that Kosmo pointed out, and I think they didn’t mess it up but wanted to keep them a bit beneath the other instruments in the mixing.
The sounds from Maroccolo on bass are spot on and add a great color.
P.S.: "Il sorriso" for me is the single of the moment, Spring is Now! Open up!!!!!

They had to be seen live... by now!
Anyway, it seems they are recording the new album.
The performance from the Exiter tour disappointed me; let's talk about it again after the next tour.

...where WHO decides to review...

I’ll interject in this discussion to make just two personal observations.
Since Luigi defines the Puglia rec as a bit "biased," I believe that all reviews are biased, especially in this space where those who choose to review do so not because a promo from EMI dropped on their heads.
The review is personal and above all subjective; in fact, the beauty of deB is precisely in engaging with the comments.
Always responding to Luigi, I don’t think losing tons of Custom Guitars and Pedals can be the sole reason for a band to change direction.
Certainly, recreating the same sound can be problematic but not impossible. Then if we talk about albums where the intention or direction is evidently different, I think using a softer sound is the result of a deliberate artistic choice.
Cheers.

Okay, so we want to be alternative, right? Tastes are tastes, and there's no arguing about that. But just because someone allows a track to be used in an ad for some big corporation doesn’t mean the value of what they do gets downgraded! It annoys me too that to find out how much credit I have on my phone I have to endure "lift me up" on a loop, and the same goes for when I turn on the TV, but here we’re talking about the whole album.

I agree, I also think the Techno-Pop dimension is the one where he’s most credible.
Moby experimented and tried to express himself with various styles, collaborating with some badass people until he found his path.
He convinced me even when he was making house music in '95; the subsequent turns have been a pleasant surprise.

Play is definitely an interesting and bold album for its variety.
Inside, you'll find absolutely everything: techno, pop, rap, etc.
It has also been a lucky album (the singles are countless) and it is the album that made Moby a household name.
However, the tracklist includes songs that, knowing the singles, you'd not expect to find on the album like "DownSlow" (more of an electro-downtempo interlude than a song, we could even call it a "skit" if we were talking about a hip-hop album) and "The sky is broken" (minimal beats and apocalyptic atmospheres).
"If things were perfect" is my absolute favorite among the tracks on this album.
An album that Moby mostly produced at home.

Lift Me Up surprised me as well when I heard it on TV. I was also astonished to learn it was Moby's new single. I listened to some tracks from the album at Feltrinelli, so I'll need to listen more carefully before voting. Anyway, he's an artist I admire. He was clever because the idea of mixing electronic pop with gospel choirs, which made Play successful, was borrowed from Alan Wilder!
