You're right that the criticism of the time was too anxious, but it's equally true that when the good and innovative things arrived, they didn't recognize them! There are hundreds of cases involving journalists from Melody Maker, NME, Rolling Stones who underestimated true and proper talents, one case in particular being my beloved Smiths. So I believe they were indeed looking for the "next big thing," but they were trapped in the fear of taking a risk.
