It's simply a true story. Nothing intended exclusively for adolescents to warn them about drugs, although it has taken that turn in part. Sure, the protagonists are young, but they stick to the story of the main character. It has been a must for several generations, a cult film and book from the '80s. No, joking aside, I believe it's impossible to trace a single source for the phenomena you mentioned. Jackson was undoubtedly an icon with a significant media impact, regardless of who he may have influenced. Many artists refine existing techniques and present them to the public with greater impact. For example, Eddie Van Halen with tapping, which was actually not a novelty at all.

All assumptions. Even the producer's words, I would take them with a grain of salt. The pseudo-hate towards the color of his skin could also be traced back to the appearance of his father (a figure in contrast to Michael Jackson). And then, the change in skin color could be associated with vitiligo, in the sense that Jackson might have turned to surgery to "accelerate" the lightening of the spots caused by his illness (?).
