Interesting proposal. However, keeping in mind that the sources Lovecraft could draw from are truly numerous, including the American preacher Cotton Mather and the books of the Golden Dawn by Crowley (quite trendy at the time). On an old Linus from the early 80s, I even found an article that drew a parallel between Lovecraft's monstrous descriptions and the "reportages" of possessions and monstrous parts - thought to be linked to dealings with the devil - written in New England during the 18th century.
